HBO documentary about two 12 year old girls who stabbed their friend in the woods of Wisconsin and blamed it on the internet created urban legend Slenderman.

Really interesting documentary in a sad and creepy way.

What do y'all think those two girls should get sentenced to? And should they be tried in adult court?

I think that one girl should clearly be put away in a mental hospital for a long while, at least until experts determine she is mentally stable. The other girl I'm not so sure about, she doesn't seem as crazy and could potentially contribute to society at some point in her life.

I'm torn.

I was really let down by this one. The majority of it is not even focused on the families but on the Slenderman myth. It honestly felt rushed and that HBO just wanted this doc NOW.

The crew couldnt talk to the victim or her family. The trial hasnt even begun. There just isnt much there.

eta: SPOILERS

and you tell us in the last 20min that the one girl's dad ALSO suffers from schizophrenia? why does that come across like an afterthought? her parents were so blind to this girl's mental state.

I don't know how anyone can listen to those girls and judge them to be adults in any sense of the word. Our legal system is not setup to handle mentally ill kids, but this is a rarity. Something like a 10 mandotary sentence to a mental facility.

Anissa was the controller and Morgan was the pawn. These scenarios are always interesting. Blind logic says the person killing is solely responsible. However, the mentally handicapped person doing the killing is being told directly from someone to stab or shot.

under the Wisconsin law, this wasnt an option unless they are tried as adults. The judge states he elected to try them as adults so they could potentially be held longer and get more help. If tried as minors, they walk away completely at 18.

The initial release date was March 2016 for this documentary.

Yeah I understood the judge's concern about what would happen when they turn 18, it was justified.

Instead of trial, seems to me both sides would make a deal...wonder if that has been discussed?

I'm just saying that I don't think it was a rushed documentary.

Just because the crew couldnt make the initial target date doesnt point to that. I guess I will rephrase and say it wasnt a well thought out and executed documentary. Left a lot on the table and again it was more of a doc on the slenderman myth than the kids and the case.

Watched this last night. Good not great; interesting, especially considering the trial hasn't started yet. Surprised this was released pre-trial, which seems rather inappropriate.

Really tough story all the way around. 12 year old girls, who would have thought? At least the victim didn't die, but has to live with the awful memory and scars forever.

That Morgan girl is nuts, though. That was obvious in the interrogation video. Just completely disaffected. Her father has schizophrenia. You could see how guilty he felt. Maybe there were warning signs, but who can predict something like this w/o a pattern of increasing violence? The victim was her best friend. There was apparently no animosity.

I don't know which of the two was more responsible for the idea. It wouldn't surprise me either way. Anissa at least showed some empathy and regret. Morgan was either putting on a show or is just completely off. She needs serious mental help. Probably nothing like this ever happens w/o the two of them together.

It's a useful warning to parents and I guess I have to give their parents some credit for telling their story in front of a camera. I felt really bad for Morgan's dad.

Agreed. And, they stretched the thing to 2 hours. Could have done the whole thing in 45 minutes. All of the drawn out shots of trees and fields drove me nuts.
