Lets be clear here. Aliens was a very good sequel to a much better original. The original Alien was a work of art top to bottom unmatched in its genre. Alien, if you cant tell is one of my all time favorites. Still love it.

Aliens had a lot of gimmicky humor and cheese mixed in which was well scripted and made for a very good sequel.

Well to be fair, the OP specified that any movies that were likely planned to have sequels don't count, so that eliminates at least half of them right there, including Empire. Was going to say that, since it made my Top 5 in MWADS.
