Will it make a huge difference in seeing the Avengers if I have not yet seen Capt. America or Iron Man 2?

no difference at all if you ever read the comics, you might miss like 1 or 2 references if you didn't
So no, it will not make a huge difference

The backstory of Capt. America is more important than that of Iron Man 2 though. If you want to watch one of them beforehand, I recommend Capt. America because there is more info from that movie that impacts the story than from Iron Man 2.

although cap has the cube background. ironman 2 shows the most with SHIELD and introduces black widow. i would think iron man would be more pivotal to the story.

the Avengers movie flows though - you can tell what kind of characters the Black Widow and Nick Fury are by their behavior and actions when you first see them

It's not necessary to have seen them but I would recommend it. This movie doesn't take time to really give the backstory on any characters as that's already been done, so if you care to know about that I would recommend checking out Iron Man 2, Capt. American, and Thor before seeing the Avengers. Take a couple hours each of the next 3 days to check them out then go see Avengers...I think you'll be glad you did.

If you see any I would say see Thor before. It's his brother who is the bad guy.

The problem with that is that Thor is an absolutely terrible movie. Where Ironman 2 and Captain America aren't bad popcorn flicks.

I disagree entirely. Thor was a much more entertaining movie than Captain America. Iron Man 2 is always good for a watch.

To the OP, seeing the other movies definitely does help.

Pivotal to the story? no, pivotal to introducing the shield agents sure.. but that's not hard to pick up on.
Not to mention the bad guy comes from Thor.. meaning you need to watch that to understand the motivations.

i guess the answer to your question is to see all the movies beforehand

The 5 MCU movies before this were all 7-8 quality flicks. Did they have some little flaws? Sure. My biggest beef was there wasn't enough action in some of them, but the stories made sense and they had a coherent plot. Are they life-altering experiences? No. Then again, no movie is ever going to change my outlook on life because Hollywood is so disconnected from reality that well I'll just leave that be.
It doesn't hurt to see the prior movies because they all form one big prologue to the movie, but they aren't 100% necessary. If I had to recommend a viewing schedule, I'd say: CA, Iron Man, Hulk, Iron Man 2 and then Thor. Chronologically, that's the timeline of the events of this cinematic universe.

Is this a joke?

Which Hulk? (Bana or Norton)
Is it possible to understand everything if you just read the movie synopsis of all of these on moviespoiler.com? I wouldn't mind seeing the Avengers, but I don't feel like spending an extra 6 hrs watching CA, Hulk and Thor.

The Norton Incredible Hulk from 2008. Don't watch any Marvel movies from before 2008. They have zero relation to these movies.

I think most of us just like to pretend that Bana one never happened. It's completely irrelevant.

Of course it is...or even just seeing Avengers blind. It's a superhero movie, not that hard to understand. To each their own, but personally I'm a big fan of movies in general and would gladly sit down for a few hours over the course of a couple days and catch up if I needed to.
