Check out Dark Days.

Its a great documentary about a community of homeless people living underground (literally) in a network of abandoned subway tunnels under NYC.

Dark Days is a great documentary.

I mention it in the Recommended Documentaries thread.

I saw one listed on here about 6 months ago I ended up watching and loving. It's called Off the Grid:Life on the Mesa. It's about a bunch of people who don't want to conform to society so they just up and move to this makeshift community in the desert. It used to be on instant watch but I think they took it off for some reason.

Showtime had a good documentary called "reversal of fortune" where the producer gave a homeless dude 100k. he blows it all in a matter of weeks. Pays 35k CASH for a truck, buys a friend of his a car, goes to the bar every night, etc

you can def tell why some people are homeless. They literally suck at making decisions

It's estimated that as many as 40% of homeless people suffer from mental illness.

I get your point based on the reference you made to the documentary, but I don't know what percent of homeless people got that way through irresponsibility that wasn't related to drugs or mental illness.

Most homeless people are only homeless for months on average, not years.

I would say it's more than that actually. I deal with a lot of homeless and mentally ill people, which is why I did say "some" because the majority really can't help it.

for the most part, you're correct.

The dude in the documentary was not mentally ill. he prefered being homeless to

This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but there's a doc called Bus 174 about poverty and homelessness in Brazil, and it focuses on one guy who hijacked a bus one day in Rio de Janeiro and made national news in a 12 hour standoff.

But more than that, it goes into how he was systematically neglected by his own government, even abused. It goes into great detail about what it's like to be homeless down there.

Not a documentary but a good regular movie on the homeless is on netflix instant right now, The Saint of Fort Washington (1993), starring Danny Glover and Matt Dillon. Haven't seen it in like 10 years but I remember it being good.

I was going to mention this one. It was sad really. This guy had a chance to completely turn his life around and blew 100k in a short period of time.

He didn't seem mentally ill, just plain fricking stupid. I don't feel sorry for him, I just don't understand how anyone could blow such an opportunity (stupid or not).

Probably because of decades of miseducation, improper socializing, lack of belief in long term gain, and possibly poor health that effects his decision making.

I can completely understand. Doesn't not make it fricking stupid, but there's some empathy to be found, I'm sure.

HBO had some documentaries on the homeless in its America Undercover series back in the day. I forget the names but they were really good.

I honestly believe he was too lazy to work and was perfectly content with his homelessness. He had siblings with jobs and homes who were pretty normal. First thing the producers did after giving him the money was set up him with a financial advisor to make sure he didn't blow it and his sisters tried to help him get a job.

He didn't want to work or hear anything about saving his money.
