I would look at the OUYA or Raspberry Pi and load XBMC on it.

I had been using my PS3 to watch netflix, youtube, etc, but it has recently crapped out.

Same here, was gonna ask something similar to you.

First on Apple TV, do you need a newer model to get HBOGO or is it just a software DL on any version?

I also used my PS3 to drop movies on it I ...ahem downloaded... and watch them through it. How do I do that without PS3 in the future?

I do have an iPad but I don't have movies on it. Could I DL movies to iPad and then mirror it to Apple TV?

This touches on one of my issues with the Apple products. It is seemingly inevitable that Apple will come out with an update after a few years that is not supported on your device, thus making you have to go buy a new one. Really infuriates me. This charger no longer works on this device, or the $300 Bose sounddock no longer works with the new iPod.

Oh, I'm pretty much an Apple hater for the way they do things (didn't stop me from buying their stock and loving it till Sept last year )

Anyway, I'm just looking for a solution to my PS3 taking a dump on me. I want HBOGO (which PS3 didn't have) and I want to be able to download movies and drop them onto something to play them on my HDTV.

Yep, but it is capitalism at its finest. They create demand for product and keep their customers coming back.

I have an ipad but I still got the roku. They didn't have HBO go on the apple tv when I got it so it was really a no brainer. Mirroring is pretty useless IMO. The Roku does everything I need it to plus you can plug headphones into the remote and cancel sound on tv which I thought was pretty cool.

It's why I bought their stock in 2008 for $109. I laughed and sold at $350, but then realized my mistake and bought back in at $340. Bought in a couple more times and last year, bought some more at $580

But I am still up on Apple and believe it will come back to $600-700 in the next year. At least I hope

eta: Can't remember if I first bought in 08 or 09, but the stock took a dump in the early part of the year and I used my tax refund to buy my first Apple shares at that $109.

If you have Directv, you might want to make sure HBOGo will play on it

If you don't have a macbook then Roku might be a better option. Apple TV needs the files to be in mp4 format unless you mirror the screen. You can hook an external HD up to the Roku and it can play damn near any format. Roku supports HBOGO for a bunch of different cable providers.

Get a cheap computer and attach it to your television. Gives you so very many viewing options.

I have EATEL so unless they add WATCHESPN, it doesn't matter what Apple TV or Roku I have...amiright?

Yeah. For instance Comcast doesn't allow HBO Go on Roku so even though I have the app, it won't work.

AppleTV

The UI is better and syncs with all your apple products (if you have any)

Thanks for reply. I have a PC and I have an iPad. Then I had a PS3 for watching downloaded movies. So just want to have that and the HBOGO use. I'm in Hawaii so we have Time Warner/Oceanic. Does Roku work with TW?

So if I dl a movie onto the iPad, I can't just watch it on the Apple TV w/o converting it to mp4? Or, are you saying I could mirror it? If so, is there anything wrong with going that route (shitty picture, etc)?

Yeah. You can download the TW roku app from the roku channel store and get all of their stuff. It works like an extra cable box if I remember correctly.

Stupid question but how do you know which version of Apple TV is the "most current"?
