They say that an actor should say that he can do anything. E.g., "Can you ride a horse?" "Damned straight, I grew up on a ranch."

A friend's retired dad was an extra on a Kevin Costner movie that shot here but did not know that. They asked a group of extras if they knew how to dance. All but him eagerly raised their hands. The movie dude pointed to him, and said come with me.

They taught him to dance the way they wanted, then put him in a scene. The old coot got good face time in the movie, as he and a lady danced across a restaurant setting.

I had a former buddy who got paid a lot of money to be an extra in college. They needed someone with an odd skill with a certain look in the background for a shot. One of the skills people recommended him. They flew him out to Los Angelas, put him up in a hotel, payed him like 500 a day, and he was in the movie in the background for like 30 seconds.

Ive extra'ed on a few here in S. Louisiana.

The hourly rate sucks, like others have already said. Days are long. The big shots on the crew are often pompous assholes. I enjoyed fricking with them. They typically look straight past you when the camera isn't rolling. I would make a point to say "good morning" "hello" "beautiful weather today, right?" just to force a reaction out of them.

As an extra you are essentially cheap set props. Most any inanimate prop you would see is more expensive than your daily rate of around $100. All that being said they were neat experiences.

Met a few good buddies that I still keep in contact with. The other extras on the outdoor civil war movies were the coolest group.

Yes and it's fricking terrible. Early days. Really long days. And you sit and wait 95% of the time.

I've done a few. 12 Years a Slave was the biggest one. They filmed some of that in the French Quarter.

With Louisiana being being Hollywood south for a few years now and countless movies and tv shows being filmed here I would think some of you or peeps you know have been in some. If so what movies and what was it like?

not me but one of my best friends played Garrison's son in JFK. I think he had one line

When they filmed Double Jeopardy here back in the day, a bunch of kids my age got to be extras and play soccer.

I was an extra in a movie called The Toy with Jackie Gleason, Ned Beatty and Richard Pryor. They filmed it (early 80's) in the LNB building downtown where I worked so a bunch of us got to be extras. Richard Pryor and Ned Beatty were cool, let us take pictures with them and Beatty even ate with us. Gleason was an arse. Unfortunately it was one of the worse movies every made.
