I was watching Any Given Sunday last night too, the movie is beyond insane. It is like Oliver Stone read north dallas forty and said lets make 1000x more insane.

I seem to remember something that looked like paper bag lanterns lighting the field of an indoor arena. Very few football movies ever capture on-the-field action in a realistic manner - much less what happens off-field.
"North Dallas Forty", for me.
As for "Any Given Sunday", I'll rate it right up there with this one:

give me a break on your complaints.
also I remember watching a "Making of" doc on the movie.
the lights were needed for filming.something with the type of film/cameras they were using and how otherwise the last game would have looked very dark.

Terrible movie.
Most football movies are awful.
There's been so few I actually liked- Rudy and the original Brian's Song are the only 2 that come to mind.
