Another Roku thread (but new and refreshing)

One of the questions that a lot of people have when it comes to using a Roku box (or something similar) as a means of replacing cable/dish is..."what the hell do I do about live sports". Well I finally have an answer to that question:
Roku has a channel called PlayOn (also available on other like devices I'm sure). PlayOn is installed on your computer and the roku pulls info from there. PlayOn has add-ins or scripts that can be used to add channels to the PlayOn interface...I recently found that there are scripts for First Row Sports as well as Project free tv. I now have the ability to watch any live sporting event on a tv that my roku is hooked up to by accessing a stream from first row sports.
Now, the streams may not always be perfect and in HD, but there are usually 7+ sources to choose a good working stream from so it's not really choppy or pixelated.
Long story a tad shorter: With the PlayOn scripts, it's possible to view live sporting events and have access to TV shows. I'm now thinking really hard about cancelling my dish service completely and dropping my netflix and hulu subs as well.

I forgot to add one part to this that is kind of a big part of it: I think these scripts require a PlayOn premium account. When I signed up for my premium account early this year it only cost $30 for a lifetime account. Now they've apparently adjusted this to a subscription, however it is only $30 for the first year and $20 each year after from what I've read. Definitely not going to ruin your bank account though

Not really? meh I will keep my DirectTV subscription and watch in crystal clear HD. Best of luck.

It all depends on the stream that is chosen. Some are a little worse than others, but the best ones you really can't even tell it's being streamed. But I understand where you're coming from, and it's definitely not for everyone. I'm more than happy to sacrifice a little quality for the ability to save > $100 per month though

How does ProjectFreeTV look via Roku?

just as good as it does on my computer...the only annoying part to me happens rather on the computer or using the tv- and that is finding a stream that doesn't have buffering issues (and even that only happens maybe 10% of the time). But those are hosting issues that nobody has any control over.
As of last night I watched Fringe, The Walking Dead and a couple of episodes of the Mentalist using my project free tv Roku thing and it was just like I was watching it downstairs on my dish receiver.

fricking awesome. Yeah there are a couple of providers on Project Free TV that are so much better than the others. I just look back at the Walking Dead episodes to see which one I landed on and keep using that provider. Each show is different though.

I tried the PlayOn trial for a week or however long it was....and my $0.02 after using it a couple times:
1) You have the ability to access the free version of Hulu. Roku only has a Hulu Plus channel.
2) For me, in order for PlayOn to work, I had to have my laptop open which was a little annoying. Since PlayOn relies on my home wifi a closed laptop apparently does not work. This was with watching something on Hulu so I'm not sure if it's just for Hulu or all of PlayOn.

If your laptop is set to hibernate or shut down upon closing the laptop lid, this would cause you issues. If you were to look in the power settings in the control panel (assuming windows...) you can setup how you want your laptop to act when you close the lid, and one of the options is "do nothing" which is probably what you needed.
