Annual thread where I talk to myself about American Idol - S22 edition

Didn’t even realize this was coming back, but still set to record so finally checked out the premiere last night.
Not the strongest contestants on night 1 imo, but if there is one to watch from this episode it has to be McKenna Breinholt
Really good performance and one of those tearjerking backstories that Idol does really well when it isn’t too forced or contrived. This is a legitimately moving story that really makes me root for her. She’s also attractive, which always helps.
She will definitely go far.
Only a couple of others that interested me so far:
Triston Harper - This one is one of those where the sentimentality is probably a little forced, but this 15 year old really does seem like a nice kid and he certainly does come from an interesting background at least, and man his voice is interesting for such a young singer.
Could be the country vote favorite for the season. Even Luke said he “out-country’d me”
Jack Blocker - No drama or anything here, but seems like a super nice guy with a good voice that just needs some work on his presentation. Really funny vote where Luke had to convince the judges and even had some more help
Not sure why the vote was split honestly, seemed like an easy ticket imo. Likely just played up drama for the show, which was fine with me because the way it played out was pretty awesome.
I know I know, is this show still on, so people still watch this, blah blah blah let me post in the thread so everyone knows how cool I am, we get it

I came across this on my Instagram last night and holy hell what a great clip.
I don’t watch the show anymore so I assumed it was from a past season and wondered if she won.
Her story was great. I honestly would watch a reality show following her, her family and budding career.

How is Survivor still on CBS.
Seems like that would have moved to some kind of streaming service only.

It really was pretty great. Really sucks that she never got to meet her birth mom. You could tell how much it meant to the family to get to see her perform.

She actually sings better than her mom

So much fluff on these tryouts
I watched the 10 people or so they showed in like 15 minutes
Can’t watch this show live anymore. Way too much nonsense in between

The last girl was by far the best of the first episode.
Also, they were way too quick to annoint so many as top ten in just one episode. Seemed actually kind of weak for a first episode.

Just finished watching her audition. As an adoptive parent this hits right in the chest. I am in tears.
Beautiful voice. Beautiful girl. She might win the whole thing.
I'm not crying, you're crying.

I watched it a few days ago. I don’t remember the names, but the guy who got the platinum ticket was pretty good.
The former Vikings player did decent (I’m a Vikings fan lol)
As an adoptive parent, the last girl/story was a good one. She’s gorgeous too! She’s a strong Christian, so I don’t know how far American idol will let her go. Seems like they try to change them up towards the end and sing songs that they don’t know
I think they said top ten for four or 5 people already which was stupid
And Lionel sure loves to get up and hug black contestants every episode. Why not do it for everyone, no matter the color?

Meh. Carrie was also a strong Christian and she won the whole damn thing, as was Fantasia. So IDK if they will hold that against her.
Gorgeous girl.
Gorgeous girl.

Haven’t finished this week’s episode yet, but caught the first half or so last night.
The first audition of the night was really good. 16 year old did a Katy Perry song, which is always risky, but she crushed it. Definitely one to watch.

They have saved the very best for last each episode.
The girl who went last on episode 2 is my winner. I believe her name is Abi. Possibly the best audition I've seen on American Idol. Alejandro would be a close 2nd.
Tonight on the 3rd episode the country guy from Georgia who went last is probably the most professional sounding voice I've heard this season. He sounds like he could be on the radio right now.
I am very pleased with the top overall talent this season. I was a bit concerned. I still don't think it has the depth as other seasons, but that could change.

Yep.
I've gone back and watched her audition 7 or 8 times and I've cried every time. It is that powerful. That perfect. That brilliant. She has been truly touched by the hand of God.
You had 3 seasoned vets in Lionel, Luke and Katy just in complete awe and both guys flat said in that moment that she's gonna win. And I think they're gonna end up being right. Plus you have to love her story of her mom raising her and 6 other siblings by herself and seeing her mom cry while listening to her sing from outside, that whole moment was perfect.
And her brother....
For those that haven't heard it, here it is. Have your tissues ready:
Abi Carter

Yeah that was good but I have to admit I wasn’t as impressed as the judges. She’s definitely great and likable and an easy top 10 so far, but Luke and Lionel saying I think we just saw the winner of American Idol surprised me a bit.
But I do have to say, after seeing Eilish sing it last night at the Oscars I actually think I enjoyed this girl’s performance more.
Regardless, this is stacking up as a girls season because there have been several that I could see winning the whole thing while maybe only one or two guys that I feel like can compete, at least at this point.
This is another that blew us away from last week’s episode that we just caught up on over the weekend.

Finally got caught up after a few weeks, not exactly sure why they’re only going from 24 to 20 after the Hawaii performances, isn’t that usually where they go to 12 or 10?
Anyway, since I wasn’t watching in real time I missed posting about Jennifer Jeffries, a pretty amazing high schooler from Starkville during auditions/Hollywood week. She definitely has one of the most unique voices this season, if not ever on the show imo. She writes her own songs, and how a 17 yo can have the gravel and soul of Janis Joplin is pretty mind blowing. She can absolutely win the whole thing and imo has a great career ahead of her regardless of what happens this season.
She improves every time she sings, is obviously benefiting from the coaching she’s getting, and had her best performance in Hawaii imo.
Definitely will be exciting to watch her career.

Jack Blocker is also a star, he is definitely the best guy this season imo. Love that he kept the facial expressions for Hollywood Week , but definitely toned them down in Hawaii.

Katie and Lionel we were wrong
Jelly Roll is a fan
And of course, McKenna continues to be a front runner. Her Hollywood week performance of Adele was outstanding, and had a great tribute to her adoptive mom in Hawaii, a stage where a lot seem to struggle.

Yeah, the Mississippi girl has one of the most unique sounds. She also sounds like she is 50. I don’t mean that as an insult.

I just met roman Collins grandfather. Really nice guy. He was supposed to go see him in Hollywood but had minor medical problem that prevented him going.
