You were right on all your points with this movie. When will Scott get it right?? Answer : Never.
I mean I wanted to see Shaw go off on the engineers in their home world (LOL), and I thought that this is what idiotic Scott would give us. I mean he could have set up some type of meeting between the aristocratic bureacrats or highly intelligent pompous arse engineers and their political leaders (whatever the hell you want to call them) with Shaw and David. So, Shaw could really unload on them about why they would wanna kill off a race of people that they created?? There was so much he could have done with that while giving us a tour of their home world that it would have been really exciting. She was so pissed from that engineer trying to kill all of them that it would have been real good drama just to see her unload on them. LOL Instead he gives us this bullshite! LOL And he doesn't really go into any good elaboration about what's driving the killer android David in wanting to wipe out both the humans and engineers. I'm just disappointed! Oh, well there's always the next one or not. lol

Looks like they're trying to milk this thing by having us wait for a 3rd movie for the "real explanation"
Based on Ridley Scott's comments "If you really want a franchise, I can keep cranking it for another six. I'm not going to close it down again. No way."
It would appear that way.

David created the Xenomorph, yet there was a mural of it in Prometheus? Very ham handed attempt to explain the alien's origin.
I know this was something taken from the movie, but there is a deleted scene that explains that the engineers in fact created the xeno, and david discovered that during his Dr. Moreau-esque adventures.

The stuff with David was awesome
Everything else was meh

This, the first hour of the movie was *yawn*, then you got 45 minutes of good, and the ending was telegraphed a mile away.

Well, as someone else said. You saw the ending coming but I don't think it was suppose to be a "gotcha" twist. You're supposed to pick up on it. I could've done without David revealing himself until throwing up the face hugger embroyos.

There was a lot of cringeworthy stuff in here.
I think the flute scene was pretty cringey

The flute scene sucked, but I enjoyed the movie as a whole.

I was somewhat underwhelmed with Covenant. Seemed rather lazy.
Entertaining at times, but over all I was disappointed.

I was entertained, but thats mainly because David was a great villain. The rest of the movie was bland, and everyone knew what was going to happen in the third act before we got there.

Watched it again and I like it more. Really cannot wait for the next film.

After watching it again the only plot hole I can really complain about is the fact that the second xenomorph happened.
That facehugger was on the dude for less than a minute and he sure as hell didn't act like he just sucked off some alien dick, so how in the frick that happened looking back at other movies who knows.

I assumed that David infected him with that second patch to the face.

That's one bit of canon that Covenant really just tossed out the window - the xeno gestation period. I mean in Alien the dude was out long enough for the crew to hike him back to the ship from the derilect craft, run tests on him, and him then come to and have some scrambled eggs before the xeno bursts. And hell in Alien 3 Ripley goes an entire DAY with a xeno queen in her. In this one the xeno bursts twice seemingly in the span of a few minutes of implantation.

Phenomenal movie. Just got around to watching it on the heels of Prometheus. The pre-Alien story line is phenomenal and frankly blows the Matrix franchise out of the water.

And apparently Blade Runner is also canonical? I'm about to nerd out for a while and watch all this stuff in order. And it's going to be fantastic.

Saw it today and thought it was trash.
My issues with it include
It completely negates the hopeful ending of Prometheus (which I also din't really care for) and felt like something that was rushed out because FRANCHISE. Dumping Noomi Rapace almost completely and having her killed off screen was lame as hell. The minute you find out she is dead it's obvious David Fassbender is evil.
It's filled with characters who are dumber than a box of rocks. I thought the scientists who decided to play with an alien worm in Prometheus were stupid but these folks who decided to just plop down on an unexplored planet and not even bother to wear protective gear and masks (I guess b/c they heard some John Denver?) are now the king morons of the franchise. Billy Crudup was one dumb as ship captain. HEY! Let's land here! HEY! Lemmie look at this egg thing the creepy robot is leading me to even though I've seen all kinds of monsters here! Sure I'll put my face right above the egg when it opens! What could go wrong????
Several characters were completely pointless and what little characterization they got had pretty much zero impact on the movie. I'm not even sure why they bothered to hire James Franco only to kill him when you don't even know it's him until after he is dead. That was quite possibly the least impactful star death I've ever seen in a movie. Danny McBride and Katherine Watterson losing their spouses was totally meaningless. Maybe there was a bunch of dialogue cut but IDGAF about anyone and felt zilch when their spouses were being killed.
Nothing was frightening. There was almost zero tension once David Fassbender shows up b/c of how obvious it was that he would be bad. When Walter Fassbender was fighting David Fassbender and paused before smashing him with a rock and then it cut to the others running it was clear as fricking day that Walter got killed and David took his place. I mean shite this movie was telegraph city.
On the positive side, it was well shot and well acted. The special effects were very good. The spore alien birth was nice and nasty. That's about it though.
I don't understand why it had mostly positive reviews. IMO it's firmly dead last in the main Alien series. If not for the special effects and acting I'd say it's also worse than the two AVP movies. At least those flicks tried a few new things.
An extremely disappointing thumbs down
