Al Pacino Says He's Still Hoping To Make 'The Irishman' With Scorsese and De Niro

Martin Scorsese has many projects developing at the same time, sometimes for years and years (see his currently filming "Silence," which he had been shepherding and trying to put together forever), but one that has fans most excited is "The Irishman." Why? Because it'll not only mark a reunion between Scorsese and Robert De Niro, but also between De Niro and Al Pacino. That alone would have any cinephile excited, and the material sounds terrific too. While it still looks to be on the distant horizon, Pacino thinks that one day that movie will get made.
“I would imagine [we’ll still make it], because the script is so good. But it’s been a long time that it’s been on the burner, so to speak,” he told Vanity Fair.
Details on the project have been coming in slow drips. Last we heard was that Pacino's pal Bobby Cannavale would be part of the cast, which may also include longtime Scorsese friends and collaborators Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel. Meanwhile, way back in 2013, Scorsese said "The Irishman" would shoot after "Silence," but of course, who knows if that's still the plan?
To refresh your memory, the project has a script by Steve Zaillian ("Gangs Of New York," "Schindler's List," "Moneyball"), adapted from the book "I Heard You Paint Houses" by Charles Brandt, and tells the true story of Frank Sheeran, a WWII veteran who led a colorful life as a high ranking officer in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters while also dabbling in organized crime as a highly-sought-after hitman, with rumored ties to the deaths of President Kennedy and Jimmy Hoffa.

While I would love to see a successful final film with Pacino and De Niro, they're well past their prime in their 70s - and Pacino is halfway to 80.
I mean, I understand that the duo doesn't want to be remembered for Righteous Kill, but it was their fault to star in what was essentially a B movie.
They were both in Godfather II, but shared no scenes. Their short shared scenes in Heat are Hollwood magic, without a doubt, but I don't think any working retirement film is going to approach that - we should be glad we got that.

I basically agree with everything you said, but it would still be awesome to see both of them together one last time for what sounds like could be an epic film, which would be sweet. You're also right that Righteous Kill was a huge letdown because even with Pacino and De Niro, that movie didn't have any chance to be any good.

Would love to see a film with Pacino and De Niro as dueling dons/crime lords. Keep the screen time for both somewhat minimal (I.e. Brando) and focus on the action / turf war between the gangs, until a final scene together at the end.

I just want to see De Niro and Scorsese work together again. Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Casino and couple others. They are at their best when working together. Might as well do one more.
