Martin Starr-guy plays the deadpan straight man better than anyone, at least anyone at his level of celebrity. Seems to have trouble breaking out of tv,

Martin Freeman: very expressive actor, I've thought he could do great things since The Office and he's fantastic in Sherlock. Also thought he was super-solid in The World's End

Vin Diesel: Ok, it's important to bear in mind that I'm talking about underrated actors, not under-exposed- but I think this guy can act with the best of them. I can respect the route he's chosen with a million F&F movies for the paycheck, but I think Vin could be a superb actor given the right role for him.

ETA: I just realized Vin Diesel doesn't fit in here, but Starr and Freeman were the focus of the topic and Diesel was added as an afterthought.

Surely there are hundreds of others, but these are the three that inspired me to make the thread and hopefully there are more to come.

Dude, I was trying to think of this guy but couldn't put my finger on it. Dude has made some poor career decisions, between X-Men: Wolverine and The Omen reboot, but he is very captivating onscreen.

He has been in a ton of huge stuff. The Hobbit was a huge role, even if the trilogy flopped a bit. Sherlock is still huge and taking tons of time.

Gyllenhaal.

I don't consider a lot of his roles "big." He makes them big, maybe, but they're not pre-ordained.

The only movie he survives in is one of the worst movies of all time

He wasn't bad in any of those, the direction and script were. Though I wouldn't of cast him as Sabretooth. He has had some good small parts in movies.

That's a really good observation, he really brings characters to life. I always used to get him and Jared Leto confused because they both have a similar approach to how intensely they portray a character as well as their broadly similar appearance.

I'm going to throw Patrick Stewart out there. He definitely has a type-casting problem because of ST but I think he's a really good actor.

with the exception of Doctor Who and Downton Abby, Sherlock is the biggest thing on TV in UK.

Can I throw Bill Paxton into this? He has gotten roles in some of the biggest movies / franchises of all time.

Early cameo in Terminator
Supporting role in Aliens
Supporting role in Predator 2
Smallish role in Titanic

Did get the lead in Twister I suppose.

Pretty cool that he got killed by both an Alien, a Predator, and beat up by a Terminator. GOAT resume if you ask me.

I was just thinking about how Jake could've been a really good Joker. He doesn't take big roles, but he has been on a roll since 2011. His "worst" film has been Source Code.

Don't forget, he got turned into a giant pile of shite by young, hot Kelly LeBrock in Weird Science.

Would Johnny Depp count? Other than the Pirates movies (would he be the star in those?), he hasn't been in really any blockbuster movies. He chooses a lot of strange roles..
