The use of the word crisis is particularly amusing

Love how it's ok to use race/gender as a voting tactic as long as it's in favor of a minority. GTFO Academy

They're adding more members. They didn't say they'll be voting in favor of minorities.

Yeah, and while people will draw conclusions from that. Wasn't Spike Lee's main point not that there is racism in the Oscar nominations, but that the racism was in what movies were getting green lit for production, preventing more Oscar worthy roles for minorities?

While true asa statement, this is not what happens when emotions get involved with cases like this. And it isn't the people, but they are not being placed there because they deserve it, they are being placed there specifically in response to minority issues, which means they'll respond to that in kind and treat their appointment as a way to push agendas.

It's agenda voting clear and simple. Now, the academy always has had an agenda to push, it will just get more aggressive and the Oscars will mean less. They were about narrow definitions of Hollywood (Oscar films not necessarily being "the best.").

This kind of reactionary declarations are just counter-intuitive.

The people who have real power in Hollywood and can green light movies are studio presidents and some big time producers. The vast majority of them are jewish men. I don't know of any blacks in those roles and I doubt there's gonna be many in the near future.

Would I love to see more women in quality lead roles? Absolutely. I have no problem saying there's probably not enough unique roles for quality actresses that aren't something spawned from a "chick flick-ish" novel or "remake". Agendas like this though are what create the monstrosities like an all-female Ghostbusters.

And as a woman I hate being lumped in with this boycott the Oscars shite.

This is what I was worried about. Now Oscar nominations will have yearly token nominations, and there will be a shadow of doubt cast over the truly deserving acting performances. Sickening.

6.028 voting members. The average voter is a 62 year old white man. The Academy is 93% white and 76% male. So, it is disproportionately white and male, but most importantly, really f'n old.

I haven't heard anyone say, should they have nominated actors or films strictly because they are minorities? Should they have voted for actors or films in spite of thinking they weren't good enough? If so, which specific actors or movies should have been left out and in favor of which specific movies? should they have voted for Will just because he is black?

The old guard picked Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan.

Could the new members really do any worse?

Yeah, but the point of adding minority members is to get more minority votes. If not, why add more of them?
