I just finished reading the "red wedding" part of A Storm of Swords, and Arya's chapter that follows. Wow. I've never been more glued to a book in my life. I think I'm going to have to go back and read those 2 chapters again to fully comprehend what just happened.

"Is there gold hidden in the village? Is there silver? Gems? Is there food? Where is Lord Beric? Where did he go? How many men were with him? How many knights? How many bowmen? How many, how many, how many, how many, how many, how many? Is there gold in the village?"

Up until the RW I would always wonder why Robb never had POV chapters. I guess that question was answered.

I'll wait till GRRM finishes the damn series before pronouncing final judgement.

The next two books could be mediocre and still get it based off the strength of the first three alone I think unless he just totally fricks up the ending

While that would piss me off it wouldn't take away from the quality of his work

The first three were another level of fantasy fiction writing. I was never so caught up in a story as I was with them. I read them consecutively at work/home in 8 days. The last two, while still good books have been a severe dropoff. I still enjoyed reading them, but was more upset than impressed at where he was taking the characters. I think he needs a strong finish to pass up Tolkien. After the first three, I had it well above, but if he doesn't bring things back to GoT, CoK, SoS levels the series will be a huge dissapointment for me. A great story with a less than great middle and ending is not truly a great story.
