I never knew for sure why Brad Pitt's character was killed. Was it a gambling debt? I assume the book went a lot further into his vices, and the movie just glossed over it.

That's what I've always assumed and I think that's what Redford was inferring. The book and the movie portray Paul Maclean (Brad Pitt) as he really was in life. In real life, Paul Maclean was a hard-core gambler, drinker, and womanizer. He was found dead outside a bar in Chicago with his murder never being solved. LINK
