Musical comedy made in 1966 but it feels like an 80s. This was definitly a major influence for History of the World.

It's not really an accurate adaptation of the Broadway show. All but 4 Sondheim songs were cut and director Richard Lester stressed flashy cutting over coherence. Star Zero Mostel hated the film.

Was the play a straight up over the top slap stuck comedy? I feel like a lot of the movie didn't work but it wasn't horrible on a lazy Sunday

quote:The stage show, though technically based on ancient Roman farce, was a spoof/tribute to old time burlesque of the '20-s and '30s ("I tell ya, a funny thing happened to me on the way to the theater. Guy came up to me and told me he hadn't had a bite all day. So I bit him.")

This clip gives you a rough idea of what burlesque was like
If you want to know more look for the movie The Night They Raided Minsky's

I actually saw a revival of Forum on Broadway in the 90s starring Nathan Lane as Pseudelus and Ernie Saballa as Lycus...So, Timon and Pumba from The Lion King. It's a great escape, and you're told what to expect from jump.
All I really remember about the film version besides Zero is that Michael Crawford (Phantom of the Opera) played Hero.
Come to think of it, I also saw a student production of Forum at LSU in the 90s as well that was done well.
As for it being a major influence for History of the World, I see why someone could think that...Now I can only think about Mary-Margaret Humes.

Michael McKean was talking about seeing the original production with Mostel and Jack Gilford (Cocoon, the Cracker Jack guy). He said that Mostel would use the small Gilford almost as a prop. He'd pick him up and place him in different places as they were doing their scenes.

I saw this at the Muny in St Louis a few weeks ago. I thought it was really funny. I had heard of it before but had never seen the movie.
The first song lays out how irreverent it's going to be.

quote:Larry Gelbart, who wrote Forum, later created MASH. In one episode the gang are in the mess tent watching a movie when they hear a woman (actually an old nurse trying to seduce Frank Burns!) scream "Rape!"
My favorite rape joke: "He raped Thrace thrice."
Hawkeye blandly reacts, "Pretty big night -- a movie and vaudeville."
Larry Gelbart would later apologize for that joke, saying it was the one line he most regretted writing

I remember in middle school in Latin class our teacher said that tomorrow we would have movie day...we were all excited...
Until he brought in A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum...
But we were pleasantly surprised.
Haven't watched that movie since then, need to revist.

My friend worked on this show at a theater in Boca Raton, FL. It was actually pretty good, too.
