He hasn't seen it either

The Russians must have hacked into the Academy Awards' computer system and changed the vote count so that Moonlight won best picture because everyone knew that La La Land was going to win in a landslide.

They should've focused more on their jobs and less on political jabs, might've helped them out. I don't feel sorry for them.

quote:I've only seen La La Land, so I'm biased for that film. And while I am sure Moonlight is deserving, it's odd that throughout the Award Season La La Land was the frontrunner winning the vast majority of the predictive precursors. 538 had La La Land with almost a 3 X advantage over Moonlight.
Fair enough. Like I said, I haven't seen either movie so I just wanted your perspective.

For me, La La Land was the clear best movie and I have seen them all. I enjoyed Lion,Arrival, and Hell or High Water more but LLL deserved best picture.
I don't think Moonlight is nearly as revolutionary or remarkable as people are making it out to be. To me it gave us nothing special or unique. I do think it is crazy they did the entire movie for a budget of $1.5 million tho.

They also gave trump and 1 and 3 shot at winning. To their credit that is more than anyone else did

quote:Well I know, but this is a bit different in that it uses the guilds (e.g., Producer Guild is the relevant one for Best Picture) and other comparable awards (e.g.. BAFTA). In this case, I guess it was only really the SAGs that deviated, and given the size of the actors guild, maybe that should have been telling.

Apparently they also switched to a preferential balloting system for Best Picture only in 2009 Explanation of System, so that may explain a number of the recent deviations in results.
quote:
Unlike the outcomes of the other categories which are determined by popular vote — i.e, a voter picks just one of the nominees and the Oscar goes to that contender with the most votes — the winner of Best Picture is arrived at by modified version of the preferential voting that determined the nominees in those other races.
quote:
Should no film cross the required 50% + one ballot threshold, the film with the fewest first-place votes is again eliminated, with its ballots being apportioned to the next choice still in play

The Huffingtin Post had an interesting article on Friday
What Would Happen If A Presenter Announced The Wrong Winner At The Oscars?
It was all just a simple mistake
What Would Happen If A Presenter Announced The Wrong Winner At The Oscars?
quote:
Cullinan and Ruiz, who spoke to The Huffington Post last week, say the exact procedure is unknown because no mistake of that kind has been made in the Oscars’ 88-year history.
“We would make sure that the correct person was known very quickly,” Cullinan said. “Whether that entails stopping the show, us walking onstage, us signaling to the stage manager — that’s really a game-time decision, if something like that were to happen. Again, it’s so unlikely.”
It was all just a simple mistake

I know very few people that post on this board have seen Moonlight but it also appears that every critic review is also being ignored.
The thing I find most funny is all of the people not giving the film any merit here based on the presumed context, having never actually watched the film.

Brian Cullinan, one of two PwC partners holding envelopes with the names of Oscar winners, tweeted “Best Actress Emma Stone backstage! #PWC” along with a photo of the actress at 9:05 p.m. Pacific time. That was approximately three minutes before Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway walked on stage to present the award for best picture. Mr. Cullinan gave Mr. Beatty the envelope that was supposed to contain the name of the best-picture winner, people close to the production said. In reality, however, Mr. Beatty was given a duplicate copy of the envelope containing Ms. Stone’s name as best actress. As a result, Ms. Dunaway mistakenly named “La La Land,” in which Ms. Stone starred, as best picture.

so Andrew Garfield spent months getting dressed up to watch his ex-girlfriend, Emma Stone, get nothing but awards?
