I'm drawn to ragged glory voices like Finn's. Paul Westerberg, Peter Case, Tom Waits, love whiskey and cigarette tinged chords.

Trail Of Dead is the one band I love, yet hate the lead vocals..pure sh!t.

One thing that worries me about their new record is the keyboardist leaving the band, because the keyboards were one of my favorite things about Boys and Girls in America.
Totally agree. I think the piano bits were some of the best parts of their songs.

I really think that Hold Steady and Drive By Truckers are the twin pillars of indie rock (and I mean indie ROCK, not all indie music). THS created this intricate world with their songs, while DBT creates a vivid new world with each song. But I think "After the Scene Died" by DBT is a direct response to THS Unified Scene songs. Great, great bands.

Sadly, the missing the piano is quite noticeable.

Sorry Baloo, that's the second time I trashed your hopes in this thread.

As you wish....

I'm on my third listen of The National too, so far so good. From my listens of Hold Steady, and my recent obsession with the Dr. Dog album, I don't think it is best of the year just yet. That may change.

It's back!

We seemed to be talking about all the good new music here, so I figured it should be bumped.

Anyways, handing out some grades:

Dr. Dog - Shame, Shame = A+
Titus Andronicus - The Monitor = A
Band of Horses - Infinite Arms = A
The National - High Violet = A
Drive-By Truckers - The Big To-Do = B+
Frightened Rabbit - The Winter of Mixed Drinks = B+
The Black Keys - Brothers = B

More to come later

The National is my album of the year at the moment. Titus Andronicus is not too far behind. I like the new Frightened Rabbit, but it is no Midnight Organ Fight. Haven't heard any of the rest. Guess I should look into them.

Still getting familiar with the new Broken Social Scene, Hold Steady, and New Pornographers. So much good music coming out these days, it is overwhelming.

You've heard of Dr. Dog right? Best album they've done.

quote:

Broken Social Scene,

This album was first time hearing them, not overly impressed. Too much electronica going on

quote:

Hold Steady

First Hold Steady to not floor me from the start. It's good, but seems like the National albums, it has to grow on me a bit.

quote:

New Pornographers

Better than Broken Social Scene, but still unsure. Needs some more listens I think.

Yeah, probably periodically bump this thread as we go through the summer, still some great stuff on the horizon.

heard of them, but never actually listened. i will try to give it a listen soon. A+ is pretty high praise.

ETA: I have actually heard their new song "Stranger" a few times. pretty cool track.

Another one of my favorites this year that I have been playing alot lately is The Tallest Man on Earth- The Wild Hunt. Sounds kind of early Bob Dylan.

It is a killer opening track for the album, but not the best song. Definitely gets better. Just a great feel, perfect for summer.

This was streaming somewhere, gave it a listen, didn't like it all that much, so I never bought the album. Maybe I should give it another shot.

Dr. Dog - Shame, Shame = A+

Not sure I'd give it an A+. I really like it, but I'm thinking closer to A-.

Titus Andronicus - The Monitor = A
An absolutely amazing album from a band I had never heard of until this year. buy this album now. Tell your friends. It's amazing.

Band of Horses - Infinite Arms = A
The National - High Violet = A
I've only listened to the National stream and I have not gotten the new Band of Horses. Put me down for an incomplete right now.

Drive-By Truckers - The Big To-Do = B+
Sounds about right. It's not near the soaring heights of SRO/TDS/DD or even the criminally underrated Brighter Than Creatin's Dark, but it's yet another good, solid alubm from a great band. However, "Birthday Boy" once again proves Mike Cooley might be the best songwriter alive.

Frightened Rabbit - The Winter of Mixed Drinks = B+
Put me down for an A or A-. Maybe one or two filler tracks, but "Swim" is the best song of the year. When my fiancee first heard the song pop up on my iPod, she thought it was an older song that was already a classic. But it's not Midnight Organ Fight.

The Black Keys - Brothers = B
It's out? /Baloo runs to store

Some other ones with my grades....

The New Pornographers - Together = A+
The best album from a great group. An immediate classic. I think this album is the reason they got together. It's so good, it's making me re-evaluate the disappointing Challengers album, as you can see that they were working to this. I've owned the album for a week and I've listened to it, no lie, about 30 times. It's great.

Hold Steady - Heaven Is Whenever = B
For a band that sings anthems, their albums tend to be growers. Stay Positive, on first listen, was a B. Now I rank it only behind the near perfect Seperation Sunday. So I bet this grade will go up. the middle section of the alubm is damn near perfect.

Ted Leo - The Brutalist Bricks = B
Leo will always be near and dear to my heart. what can i say? It sounds like a Ted Leo album.

Frog Eyes - Paul's Tomb = C+
Overrated. Clap clap clap clap clap.

Alkaline Trio - This Addiction = B+
I should have outgrown the Trio by now, but really, they are a great pop punk band who writes just terrific world-weary lyrics. Sure, it's all the same three chords. But it's three really good chords. What other band would compare their love to their heroin addiction?

BRMC - Beat the Devil's Tatto = B-
Typical BRMC. a few truly great songs mixed in with a ton of filler. They scale great heights, but are wildly inconsistent. They could put out a killer compilation album.

Motion City Soundtrack - My Dinosaur Life = B
Pop punk is a rightfully maligned genre, but it's really great when a young band gets it right. It's a fun album.

Midlake - The Courage of Others = B-
Meh.

Spoon - Transference = B
Solid album, but it's nowhere near something like Kill the Moonlight.

Los Campesinos! - Romance Is Boring = A-
A band that's been around awhile makes their statement for greatness. Not all of theideas work, but an ambitious album.

Kate Nash - My Best Friend Is You = B+
I have a not-too-secret crush on Kate Nash. I like pottymouthed redheaded Englishwomen.

Agreed. And this is sad, because Van Occupanther is one of my favorite albums of the decade. It was a good album, but way too safe.

Yeah, the Texas bands let me down. Solid efforts, but I really think they'll end up being iPod filler.

I literally cannot listen to this band. Pandora hipped me to them and I thought it might be a band I could get into. But I checked them out in detail and was like naw I'll pass.
Had to throw some negativity in the thread. Sorry.

'sok. I think Spoon is overrated because Austin finally has a good band to call their own (for all of their great live scene - local Austin bands tend to suck). I think Spoon's early stuff is great but they just had too many people tell them how brilliant they are and they've sort of stagnated. I like 'em, but I do think they are a level below, and not nearly as good as their inflated reputation.

But Kill the Moonlight is a kickass album.
