Before money took over amateur sports, before the BCS BS, college football had the best playoff system in sports - AND THAT'S WHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL WAS KING!
You want expansion? Pre-BCS we had a 130-team playoff. You can't expand anymore than that. Every game counted in a 10 and then 11-game schedule, until the teams were whittled down to a handful going into bowl season.
This is why college football used to be king. It had the best playoff format already built-in. There was one spectacular day in which 2, 3, 4, or maybe 5 teams were playing with a chance to win a national championship. Guess what, there were no opt outs...NONE.
This is likely how the bowls would have played out pre-BCS....
Sugar – No. 1 Alabama vs No. 5 Notre Dame
Cotton – No. 6 Baylor vs. No. 3 Georgia
Rose – No. 2 Michigan vs. No. 10 Utah
Orange – No. 13 Pitt vs. No. 4 Cincinnati
No less than 5 teams have a chance to win the natty on college sports biggest day of the year depending on how everything plays out.
College football used to be king because it already had the best playoff system in sports. It was king because every game counted and New Year's Day was the best day in sports.
The BCS was the beginning of the end and paved the way to what we have today, a watered down version. And you folks who want to expand on that dilution, well, you're going to get your way. The BCS was set up to ease us into a playoff that was meant to expand beyond just 4 teams.
So you'll get your watered down version and the regular season will be as ignored as the NFL's.

Usually it was about 3 teams that had a shot and that really depended on media who played favorites.

Lol that shite was retarded. There were so many years where the best teams did not play each other. College footballs systems have always been broken no matter what they have tried. But at the end of the day, we as fans love everything else about the sport because we are a nation that’s batshit obsessed with football.

Besides, if you thought that 2017 UCF had any chance against either Alabama or Georgia, then you don't really pay that much attention to college football. They had less of a chance than Cincinnati did against Alabama. Anyone with a functioning brain could have seen that coming. And that isn't even one of the better Alabama teams over the last decade.
I'm not saying the old way of doing things was perfect, but it was what made college football so popular. It is quickly turning into a boring version of NFL-lite.

I'm sure the bowl games were more exciting back then back that was a terrible method of finding a national champion. No 1 vs. 2 matchup, just a random assortment of the good teams and the title goes to whoever has the most media hype.

Yep
Sugar, Rose, Orange, Cotton...determined the outcome of the Final vote. #1 would be playing #4 in the Rose, #2 would be playing #7 in the Orange.
He'll Bama claims a MNC because they were #4 heading into the bowls and everyone ahead of them lost.
Miami won a Natty as a #5 heading their bowl game because they beat #1 Nebraska and #2 lost their bowl game.

You only want the regular season to count for a select few teams. The irony of this is wild. Theyve already listed multiple undefeated teams who weren’t given any chance at being a national champion. You can’t base it off of schedule alone, those are set years in advance now. You can’t control how good your conference mates are, and have no say over who you play.
And there are some 1 loss teams who deserve that chance as well.
