LINK

quote:

Kevin Garnett for Kawhi Leonard, Tiago Splitter and Boris Diaw Now, here’s where we get speculative. The Celtics are keeping up a brave face, but they were barely a playoff team with one of the NBA’s best PG’s playing 40 minutes a night. In all likelihood, Rondo won’t be at or near 100% for at least 12 months, which means two essentially rebuilding years for Boston. At that point, Paul Pierce will be 37 and Garnett will be 38. Dealing them now would accelerate the rebuilding process around Rondo and it could be sold as a way to give two Hall of Famers one more chance at a ring. For the Celtics, Kawhi Leonard is the key piece in this trade. He’s an athletic 6’7, 225 small forward who can match up with multiple positions, rebound and stretch the floor. That’s exactly the type of player I want around Rondo: someone who can run the break and provide spacing in the half-court without compromising the team defensively. Splitter and Diaw are there as expiring contracts. They could help Boston’s depth upfront, but the Celtics would probably waive them to “give Jared Sullinger an opportunity” a.k.a. move up in the draft. Giving up Leonard would be difficult for the Spurs, but their primary concern should be maximizing Tim Duncan’s final years. When he’s gone, a team built around Leonard and an aging Tony Parker isn’t going anywhere. Garnett would be the absolute perfect piece: he’s precisely the combination of interior defense and perimeter shooting they’ve been looking for since Robert Horry retired. How awesome would it be to watch the two greatest power forwards of all-time ride off into the sunset together?

Interesting Concept though

Pop loves Leonard

KG and Duncan legitimately hate each other.

I don't care how professional they are. If I were Duncan I wouldn't be able to play with someone who told me "Happy Mothers Day" not long after my mom died

KG has a no trade clause

Duncan is the man in San Antonio

KG hates Duncan

Duncan hates KG

KG is probably going to retire this summer so no way the Spurs give up Leonard and Splitter for a guy that wont be around next season

/this trade talk

The point of the thread was to discuss all trades in the link not just KG and Duncan Co-Existing.

All of his trades aren't that bad, from a basketball standpoint. The only one I really disagree with is the Mavs/Lakers one because I don't that solves anything for either team.

Even though I despise Rondo, I would like to see that end-result Boston team, and Josh Smith on Portland

Why the frick would the spurs consider this? Get rid of their young, versatile piece to get back a HOFer 7 years past his prime? Let me guess, this guy is a bastin fan

Of course the Cs do it, but the spurs ain't bending over so bastin can jump start their 5-years-in-the-making rebuilding process

theres a reason Jeff green is the best player they've been able to trade for. The Celtic front office/ fans/ NE coast think they have valuable trade assets in over the hill, big salaried PP and KG. they think they're holding a set of queens. In reality, they have old players with team unfriendly contracts. Everyone else thinks the Cs are holding a pair of 8s

Ultimately, the proof is in the pudding. The reason they haven't moved these guys the last few years is bc they haven't found someone to dupe into taking on their old legs and big contracts. No one is going to give up legit, young assets to rent a past his prime HOFer

it's an interesting trade suggestion. I think it does solve some defensive issues for the Lakers, and probably some attitude and effort ones too.

and a Pau/ Dirk combo would be cool. gets Dirk that supporting star for his last run, and gives them an inside scorer. Dirk/ Pau going high low would be nasty.

but it saves the Lakers some salary next season and potentially improves them in the short and long term, don't think Cuban wants to do that.

eta: not to mention it adds salary/ decreases flexibility this summer for the Mavs

It's a question of whether it's better to rebuild now, or to try to grab for the ring one last time before Timmy rides off into the sunset. There are strong reasons for San Antonio to do it; they want to make a serious run at an additional title, and realize that when Duncan hangs them up, they're going to be in a no-man's land where you are in NBA hell because you will be good enough to just make the playoffs or just miss them, and have no real shot at landing a franchise changer in the draft.

Garnett fits their current need nicely, and gives them a better shot at winning now, then blowing it up and rebuilding without spending 2 or 3 years in that hellish position where they're between 7th and 11th in the Western Conference. If Garnett and Duncan decide to both retire after this year, San Antonio would have a ton of cap space and could rebuild in earnest around Parker and a huge amount of cap room. If Duncan goes and Garnett stays they can still trade way Garnett and blow it all up.

The only real question, from a basketball perspective, would be if they thought the move would be enough to put them ahead of the elite in the West; unfortunately, from a personality standpoint, it would never work.

Garnett, as an aside, is still a borderline All-Star performer. He's not a Top 5 guy in the league, but he's still a Top 30-35 type and still defends bigs at the highest level, while finding his offense without being ball-dominant.

San Antonio is very much where Boston found itself after it lost it's attempt at a repeat; they can give it another serious run, or they can start the rebuilding in earnest-- but holding pat is a recipe for decline.
