I'm not baseball historian but seeing ESPNs top 10 players gave me pause. Sure I think greats like Mantle, Gherig, Mays, Aaron and Cobb would have translated well but would their stats be on par or reduced with modern training and competition?

I'm sure this has probably been debated to death at some point but I'd be hard pressed to believe many of the modern era greats wouldn't stack up with these historical elites if they played in the same era, old or modern.

Thoughts?

DeAndre Jordan would hit 80 HRs per season in the 1950s.

I will admit it was darn exciting whenever Matt Stairs would jack one. He did not get cheated.

In any sport this is true athletes today are bigger faster stronger. Guys like bob Cousy being top 50 all time in the nba cracks me up bc a scrub like pat Beverley would eat his lunch

No. And that is for any sport.

Tony Gwynn was saying a few years back it was rare to see a relief pitcher throw 95 mph in his day. The entire Marlins bullpen can hit 95.

Could the players of today get around on a fastball with the tree trunks the old players used to swing?

If you literally just dropped those guys into today's world, no they would not be any good.

Pre-1969 players had to face guys who were pitching from a higher mound. Yuuuuuge advantage for the pitcher.

I believe Mays, Mantle, Aaron, & Clemente could play in today's game at a very high level.

The best hitters certainly would. Mantle, Dimaggio, Carew, Mays, Aaron. Their swings would stand the test of time without a doubt.

An offensive lineman from the 60s would have no chance in today's NFL.

Baseball is different in that it's all talent and skill. If Babe Ruth or Willie Mays stepped out if a time machine, they'd be amazed at today's pitching, but that's something they could adjust to. The great hitters would do fine today after getting acclimated.

Babe Ruth would be out of the league in under 10 years today.

That lifestyle would catch up with him fast...and he wouldn't have the luxury of getting by on natural ability

Jeter did even more drinking and carousing than Ruth.

And being fat didn't hurt Cecil Fielder.

Fielder retired 20 years ago. Different times, yet then he still had a short prime.
