Would Roger Maris get dominated in an "all time greats" baseball game?

You look at his career stats and they're just not very good

He hit .260 for his career with only 275 hrs and 850 RBI in 12 years

He only hit over 30 hrs 3 times and over 40 once (1961)

He had over 100 RBI only 3 times

His 3 season of over 30 hrs and over 100 RBI (1960-1962) were all 3 in a lineup where he was hitting right before or right after Mickey Mantle which certainly helped his stats.

Maris was an average to above average major leaguer who had one great power season

You mean season right? Singular baseball games are random as hell. A bench player from LSU could go 2-3 in a major league game if they're lucky enough to find the right holes or if the pitcher on the mound hangs a few breaking balls to them in the middle of the plate.

Jesus fricking Christ dude it's a hypothetical thread, yea sure in a single game I could close my eyes and swing and get a hit off Randy Johnson, you know what I mean through don't be that guy

Using my MSB detective skills it's obvious the dude was totes juicing for that '61 season.

Nobody has random jumps in stats like that! MSB SAYS IT SO IT MUST BE TRUE!

Two-time AL MVP who lost a lot of power after breaking his wrist. Excellent fielder with a very good arm.

Well, he's not a HOFer so I'm pretty sure the all time greats are better than him. He had one great year in '61, a few good years, and was mostly an above average to average player in other years. You answered your own question in your post.

My father was a big Maris fan. He said injuries and his treatment in New York held him back. Maris' personality was more suited for the Kansas City A's.

This is one of those Peak Value vs Career Value problems, discussed by Bill James at length.

Peak Roger Maris would do fine, career average Maris not so much.

Was he am all time great, no. Hall of Famer, no

But he was a 7 time all-star, 2 time MVP, and from 1960-1968 he appeared in 7 World Series.

No, he wouldn't be on the field.

As far as getting dominated, the only thing that matters would be the pitching.

He hit .324 against Jim Bunning, .275 against Early Wynn, .154 against Hoyt Wilhelm, .182 against Whitey Ford, .273 against Gaylord Perry, and .200 against Herb Score.

LINK

If I didn't make any mistakes, those are the Hall of Famers he faced at least 20 times. So it's a mixed bag. The link is a complete head to head list.

Are you sure that's the right one? I thought the HOFer was an outfielder for the Phillies. But I'm not 100% sure.

He was a pitcher.

There is only one Robin Roberts. A pitcher for the Phillies and a cup of coffee with the Orioles in the 50's and 60's. Of course, there is Robin Roberts from GMA on ABC who played WCBB. Maybe that's what you're thinking about.

I believe Roberts spent some time with the Astros after his Phillies career.
