Will Tiger be all-time #1 in anything golf related?

For even the Tiger fans, I think it's a given that he will not come close to breaking Jack's record of 18 majors. But something I did not realize is that he is not even number one in PGA tour wins. That belongs to Sam Snead with 82. Tiger has 79.
I just don't see him winning three or four more.

Probably won't end up at No. 1 in PGA Wins and Majors, but he's a solid No. 2 in both categories.
Dominant.
Dominant.

Some Sam Snead records

quote:
Sam Snead. He is the oldest to make a tour cut: 67 years, 2 months, 21 days at the 1979 Manufacturers Hanover Westchester Classic. He is also the oldest to finish in the top 10 in a PGA Tour event (63-3-4, 1975 B.C. Open), oldest to make the cut in a major (67-2-7, 1979 PGA) and oldest to finish in the top 10 in a major (62-2-15, 1974 PGA).
Snead's other significant-age record: oldest winner of a PGA Tour event. It was 50 years ago (April 1-4) that Snead won the Greater Greensboro Open for the eighth time in his illustrious career. Slammin' Sammy was 52 years, 10 months, 8 days old when he finished rounds of 68-69-68-68—273 at Sedgefield Country Club to win by five over three players. It was the same margin of victory Snead had in his first GGO victory in 1938. New York Times golf writer Lincoln A. Werden began his game story, "Sam Snead won the Greater Greensboro Open for the eighth time today and every senior golfer smiled."

Well I don't know if this stuff falls under "#1 in anything golf related" but he has records like:
- Lowest scoring average over the course of a PGA season
- Lowest career scoring average
- Only person to hold all 4 major titles at the same time
- Most consecutive cuts made
- Won the highest % of tournaments entered
But you're right, he probably won't get the 2 you mentioned in the OP

Tiger has 14. Not sure anyone will ever get closer than that to Jack's record. He is three shy of the total victories record. When you consider the level of competition each was faced with, Tiger's resume quickly elevates him to number 1, IMO.
No one in history has simultaneously dominated and revolutionized a sport the way Eldrick did. Courses had to be "Tiger-proofed" just to keep him from running away with tournaments. It still didn't matter.

Well, he will be/already is #1 in more things golf related than any other player who has ever lived, by far.
But of the two lists you mentioned, I guess it remains to be seen.

Meh. This stat is like Wilts 100 point game. Golf was a lot more competitive when Tiger started playing

That is true. But you know not holding #1 in the books in the two that mean the most probably eat away at the ego-maniac.

So a lot of people are completely fine trying to say Lebron and or Kobe are better than MJ because of stats, wins, etc....but totally ignore what Tiger did through the vast majority of his career.

Tiger was more dominant during a 5-6 year period than any golfer in history. But overall Jack is #1. Jack has 18 majors but also finished 2nd in majors 19 times. Just think about that for a second...... He was in s position to win 37 majors. That alone puts him #1 in my book.

Most consecutive professional major wins (4) is one of if not the greatest record in all of sports and may never be matched.
Largest margin of victory in a major (15 shots)
Those are two significant records

The question is, if he does reach both of the goals you mentioned, how mad will you be? I suspect if he does you will hate him more than you ever have.
great thread by the way.

This post makes no sense. Unless you meant not a lot of people and also meant despite stats and wins.

TBH, Peej, I don't think its even fair to compare them. Its almost apples and oranges in my book.
Jack was hands down the greatest of his era. Tiger hands down the greatest in modern era. Technology, competition, and the game itself (and style of play) was so different between the two eras. Its really hard to say one is greater than the other.
With a gun to my head, I'm going Tiger though.

I always thought "Tiger-proofing" courses actually made it easier for him to win. Tiger-proofing was just a fancy way of saying they made courses longer. Adding distance effectively eliminated shorter hitters, thus reducing the number of people who could compete with him.

You have a point there . Hard to compare because of eras. It's also hard to compare players from both eras. Golf is s game of you against the course and the elements.

Yeah, it is literally impossible unless discussing only stats. And although stats don't lie, they don't always tell the full story either.
