You honestly think it'll stop at Ole Miss? So naive.

They should just go with University of Mississippi Rebels

You are arguing with nobody because you completely missed what I said.
And the Clarion Ledger isn't Ole Miss' newspaper. It's in Jackson 2.5 hours South.
Nor is it mine? I am from Baton Rouge so I read the Shreveport Times for my LSU opinion articles.

You're actually The University of Mississippi Ole Miss Rebels

I think they should be the Fightin' 50ths.

BluegrassBelle and Caterpillar right for the most part. The name "Ole Miss" has origins that do not exactly connect to racist ideals, however, there are connotations to those xenophobic and racist beliefs that continue to persist. Ole Miss has already eliminated most the perceived racist ideas and to my knowledge does not have the phrase "rebels" written on any of their athletic gear, fwiw. I think the University will continue to take heat nonetheless.

I hope they don't rebrand. "Go to Hell Mississippi" or "Go to Hell UM" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Ole Miss is the accepted form of the name of the university.
They've never given a frick and they will never give a frick.

As always, this will just be a topic for narrow minded people without real world responsibilities to get worked up about.

Some of the most liberal news outlets (huffington post, msnbc, etc) have been praising OM for changing their ways long before this was even an issue. Yesterday the ncaa recognized our chancellor and athletic director for achievements in diversity.
So gfy

Is UNLV still getting a pass on their nickname? Just seems like you don't hear a lot of complaints about them.

Everything about Ole Miss is racist. The term Ole Miss came from a term the slaves used to addresses the wives of the plantation owners. Colonel Reb was the caricature of a plantation owner. They are associated with the confederate flag more than any other school. The nickname Rebels was only chosen because it was easier to say than the other nickname of choice, Ole Massas.
You're the worst type of person

UM’s longstanding nickname is beloved by the vast majority of its students and alumni,” the university said. “But a few, especially some university faculty, are uncomfortable with it.
Oh and here is a link for you on the origin of Col Reb. But go ahead and keep saying he is a Plantation Owner and racist. It makes it easy for us to know who the dumbasses are.

A tall, distinguished man dressed impeccably in a black suit and white shirt, Ivy used a cane and wore a wide-brimmed hat. It is speculated that the figure of “Colonel Reb” is based on Ivy. “Blind Jim” was known for his loyalty to the football, basketball and baseball teams. His optimism, perseverance and humor endeared him to many people

Since Nancy Pelosi is all fired up about banning state flags, let's go ahead and get rid of the racist California flag and make Cal change it's mascot.

When the Legislature voted to adopt the rebel standard as the state flag in 1911, California was in the grip of a racist, jingoistic fever. The measure was sponsored by Sen. James Holohan from Watsonville, a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West. This was an organization whose magazine, the Grizzly Bear, declared in the very issue in which it announced the introduction of the bill, “Close the public school doors to Japanese and other undesirables NOW! Close the doors through which aliens can legally own or lease the soil of California NOW!”
