Why was Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan so good at their coaching jobs?

Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan led their teams to six league championships and three World Series championships during their tandem as manager/pitching coach.
Why were they so good at their coaching jobs, guiding superstars like Eckersley, Canseco, McGwire, Edmonds, Morris, Pujols, Carpenter, Wainwright?

LaRussa despite all his succees lost to the worst WS team of all-time while fielding a team of a roiders.
He should have won 3 consecutive WS with those A's.

Dodgers? That Reds team was good, they had one of best pens. Flames from right and left side.

Interesting. 1988 Dodgers are worst WS champ of all time
At least they weren’t like 2011 cards and got benefit out of bs all star game home field advantage

Don't know enough about the ins and outs of Duncan's coaching to comment about him but I can tell you what made La Russa great. La Russa was an innovator and a very tactically proficient manager. He redefined the way teams managed their bullpens by creating specialized roles for relievers to optimize their performance. Before teams would just have their best relievers throw multiple innings to close out a game or just have the starter pitch the entire game. La Russa was one of the first managers to use one inning relief specialists with closers pitching one inning, setup men, LOOGYs, etc... And no manager before or after him has ever been better at managing a bullpen. The A's and Cardinals had historically great bullpens under his watch. How many managers can win a postseason series without a single starter going past the fifth inning like La Russa did in the 2011 NLCS? That's just brilliant managing. He was also great at optimizing batting lineups. He was one of the first managers to bat pitchers eighth in their lineup because he realized that it hurt run production to have hitters at the top of the lineup constantly come up to hit with the bases empty. So to sum it up, La Russa is one of the few managers whose tactical acumen is so great that he actually had a significantly positive impact on a team's win-loss record unlike most managers who usually are completely reliant on the talent of their team to achieve success.
