How about Dexys Midnight Runners for the halftime show?

Ehh. To moderately piggyback on the OP in 30 years nobody will say I wish there were more singers with a voice like Katy Perry.

Just a really silly argument, in general.

We are living in the here and now. Who from this generation will be remembered in 30 years, in terms of pop music? Beyonce? Justin Timberlake? Obviously there are some rappers, but they'd never have them perform at halftime, because old geezers like the OP would bitch endlessly.

You want them to get people from 30 years ago? The Who was awful. And they were old and not nearly as good of performers as they once were.

Again, she's one of the best entertainers in the industry, with a good voice. That's what they want. She's a great get.

KP is kind of lame. She is an upgrade over some of the other acts they have had. And to the person thinking Bruno Mars sucks, you are a moron. That guy is a good pop singer. Not all pop has to be great; it rarely ever is.

Bruno was pretty much the perfect guy. A lot of his music is bluesy and has a '70s feel to it. And he can really sing. He can cross a few generations.

I'm just saying her voice is nothing special I don't really care about 30 years from now. I have no objection to her performing. I don't watch the halftime show so if her titties pop out it'll be on the net 5 seconds later so I don't feel I'll miss much.

If youre too far up your own arse to understand that yesteryear's "real music" was yesteryesteryear's "god durn infernal racket" then i dont know what to tell you.

Like honestly dude. No generation is objectively better. Music has existed for thousands of years. It changes.

I'm not. I love a lot of "modern" music. I named some modern bands above that I enjoy.

According to who? Because if you compare the crop of mainstream artists today to the music that was popular in the 70's and before that, there's really no denying the quality has gone down considerably.

That's why you've seen a rise in independent labels and experimental music because the big record labels don't take music seriously anymore as an art form. It's all about $$$ for them.

50 million women watch the Super Bowl. It would be short-sighted and bad business to have a halftime without broad appeal. Katy Perry is very popular and easy on the eyes if you don't like her music. What business wants to pay top dollar for the commercial slot leading into the Explosions in the Sky halftime show?

If you're putting "artist" like you did in quotes around Bruno Mars performance your crazy.

Chili peppers just did it too.

Why wouldn't they use pop music. The halftime show is more for the non-football, commercial watching fans than those of us who love the sport.

It's entertainment dummy, it isn't always going to be remarkable or unique. Don't be so stuck up.

A business with some balls. They would be praised for years. Katy Perry will be a forgettable show. But hey, lets just continue to dumb every thing down because it might not make as much money. Thank god for innovators like Steve Jobs and Shawn Fanning who decided they would actually try to change things and take chances, instead of just serving the almighty dollar.

I am a jam guy, don't get me wrong. But what, you want to hear one song at halftime? Or condensed crappy versions of Phish? Which isn't as popular?

This isn't a god damn festival folks. It's a football game.

Why couldn't that be changed? Why are we stuck with a sub par product because it makes more money? Whos to say having a jam or indie band wouldn't make money? (it would) You know how many musicians/artists I know who hate football but would watch the Super Bowl if they actually had someone respectable on there? A lot.
