I know it doesn't matter, but why even have this? It brings about even more distrust about pollsters and committees legitimate favoring of SEC teams. Plus, it's just ridiculous that if Virginia does the unthinkable and ends Florida State's 20+ game win streak, they will have not beaten the #1 team in the country.

I understand people are saying they are both undefeated and Mississippi State's schedule is harder. It really hasn't been. Certainly not after this week. Looking at it based on resume(not necessarily saying OK St would beat Arkansas, I guarantee Miss State doesn't want to get into a who-would-be-favored contest with FSU anyway)

Auburn ~ Notre Dame
@LSU > Clemson
Texas A&M < @Louisville
Arkansas < Oklahoma State
@Kentucky ~ @NC St

But after that, Miss St has an absolutely horrid schedule of Southern Miss, UAB, South Alabama, and after this week, UTM. Thats 4 absolutely terrible teams. The only complete joke game FSU has is Citadel(and arguably Wake, although Wake is better than all of MSUs non-conference.)

It would be one thing(still ridiculous IMO) to put Miss St at #1 after they beat AUB and then switch them back after FSU beat a top 5 team themselves. But to keep them there by a wide margin? And I understand that Mississippi State has a very tough schedule coming up, but you can't rank a team based on games they have coming up that they are underdogs in

Oh, did I mention that Florida State is the defending champions coming off an undefeated season? This wasn't some unmerited preseason ranking based on ESPN hype machine like USC a few years ago. They earned that number 1 ranking to start. I just don't understand how it could be taken away by a team that has played a less competitive schedule thus far and would be 5+ point underdogs to them on a neutral field. I know its not important as both control their own destiny, but I will say it lessens my faith in the committee.

In conclusion....
1) Florida State would be favored by a relatively wide margin
2) Florida State has played a better schedule
3) Florida State started the year ahead on merit.
4) Mississippi State will play a better schedule

Because FSU is not a very good team. Good, but not #1, or #2 for that matter, good.

Florida State would be favored by more over Mississippi State than Auburn would be over Notre Dame.

Look I understand that in practice, MSU's schedule has been tougher this far. Arkansas and Texas A&M are good wins if you look at how good those teams actually are and not their resumes. But you can't have it both ways. If you want to do it based on how good a team ACTUALLY is and not what they've accomplished, why bring in the middle man of looking at schedules? They are both undefeated and no sports book in their right mind would have Miss St over Florida State. And that is not debatable.

Auburn > ND
LSU = Clemson, maybe even Clemson>LSU for the LSU team they beat

FSU has looked questionable against NC State, ND, and Clemson and perhaps should have lost to ND and Clemson. The committee and pollsters ranking them behind MSU is a rare example of opinion polls readjusting their preseason expectations on the basis of what they see on the field.

Terrible, terrible argument. The preseason ranking (or prior season) ranking is what makes the opinion polls worse than they could and should be in reality.

I think the error pollsters are making is saying "They are both undefeated and Mississippi State PLAYS a better schedule, so if they both continue to win like #1 teams are expected, they will be higher." But they haven't played a better schedule. They really just haven't from an objective sense. They've won their games more convincingly even after last weeks win against Arkansas closed the margin.

So I understand that. But I really only think that argument really holds up when people actually think the team winning more convincingly is actually better. Florida State was the hands down best team last year and returns the best player in college football.

If we're going to look at what FSU did last year, FSU needed a drive in the waning moments to beat Auburn. MSU beat Auburn by 15 points 9 months later.

Notre Dame has done nothing to show they're on the level with Auburn. MSU's signature win is better than anyone else's in the country.

I have no problem with the season before having a slight effect on the opening rankings. No, I don't think they should be factored in when comparing a 9-3 team vs a 11-1 team with comparable schedules. But two teams with very similar resumes very early in the season? There are worse evils than letting the play of the team on the field the year before playing a small factor in absence of glaring differences for the current year.

true, and this is a great thread actually.

FSU would be favored by 6 over Miss St
Auburn would be favored by 2.5 over ND

First of all, no. Oregon and Ole Miss have better signature wins. Second of all, the best you could come up with was knocking Florida State for beating the #2 team in the country to finish off an undefeated season......

well yeah, it isn't a crime. it is just stupidity.

it would be better to just get in better touch with the bias and admit the early season rankings are often crap. very few teams sustain top five rankings from year to year - and even the teams that do often do it on name recognition more than accomplishments when you compare them to teams with similar resumes but ranked outside of the top five.
