Why is Louisiana an aberration for NASCAR popularity being a southern state?

Born and raised in Louisiana and have never met anyone enthralled with the sport. Yet when I travel to Georgia, the Carolina's, Tennessee, Alabama, etc...you come across more fans and NASCAR emblems are more prevalent on vehicles.

You have obviously never spent time in north Louisiana.

I have. It pales in comparison with the states I mentioned. Maybe a few fans around Shreveport, but that's about it.

Nope. This was my first thought as to why there might not be as many fans there compared to the states he named in the OP

There isn't one in Mississippi either and yet there's more fans there. Plus the state of Mississippi has NASCAR license plates.

South Louisiana is just a completely different culture than North Louisiana/bible belt

Very few things in common with the rest of the "south" when you think about it

Food, religion, language, music

1. There are no NASCAR tracks or races in the state.

2. South Louisiana is horse racing country. Acadiana produces more winning jockeys than just about anywhere.

3. Our roads suck.

Well, south Florida and the panhandle of Florida are totally different yet there's a nice track in homestead which is in Miami area.

If only there were an Affliction sponsor...or maybe if some unqualified coonass with a thick grunting accent were a driver, crew chief, or owner....my coonass brethren would be all over NASCAR.

Yep.

South Louisiana being majority catholic and basically cajun vatican city affects a whole lot more in daily life and culture than people really think.

I live in south Louisiana. About an hour and 15 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico. I'm a diehard and have been for going on 19 years. I can count on one hand the diehard NASCAR fans I know down here.
