it seems odd that industries that generally do everything to make as much money as possible don't follow the European soccer model of putting out a new jersey every year.

Soccer does it and it gives people a reason to buy a new soccer jersey.

I know tradition plays a huge roll in a lot of things but it would make sense to do at least 1 New Jersey every year for a game or two.

Think it has a lot to do with sponsor money. If they didn't have sponsors on the shirt, I doubt they would change that much.

Also soccer shirts are probably the most wearable of any sport

Because the product logo on the chest with such prominence is tacky.

Because soccer jerseys are fricking retarded

I saw soccer on TV and it was the Aons vs. The Fly Emirates. Most retarded team names ever

Pretty sure there is an MLS team whose mascot is the Xbox's also

You probably changed the channel because the camera panned to a female in the stands.

Sometimes the brand they've built through that uniform is worth more than whatever monetary value a temporary uniform change and new identity would yield.

Im going to guess that they value brand identity, and want a recognizable look, year in and year out

The Lions inside striping is bad
I like going back to the grey masks though.

It's not about the example being soccer though. It's the point that there is an example of financial viability for changing the uniform every year to entice fans to buy the newest version.

There are some problems though for other sports trying to vary things yearly. Hockey and football uniforms are a bit constrained because of how shoulder pads limit design because things look weird if you don't use the natural shape when designing trim lines and stuff. Basketball jerseys don't (typically) have sleeves, or really shoulders, so you lose the most common places to add or change design details. Baseball jerseys just aren't flashy typically, so you can't do that much to change the designs unless you're going to go really against the grain of the sport.

ETA: The only American "sport" that I can think of that uses this "design change to create merchandise sales" method consistently is actually the most likely group to hate soccer, NASCAR. It's also the only American "sport" where the sponsors are a big part of the team identity, too. A NASCAR driver may drive cars with multiple paint schemes within a single year, and the merchandise vendors will have shirts, hats, and other items for every single one.

Teams really can't do throwbacks anymore due to weird helmet rules.
