I'm certain that Monk or anyone like him isn't hurting for cash.

Because as we all know Calipari would have to pay Monk to come play for him over the amazing Mike Anderson.

Every time this comes up I say the same thing. Brandon Jennings did it and has openly said his personal experience sucked and that if you go to the wrong league they might not even pay you on time

I know a few guys that were all conference players in college and loved being in college. If it wasn't for the pay in Europe they wouldn't be over there. The only people you interact with daily is your coaches and teammates. You spend a majority of your time in hotels talking to family back home and hanging with teammates who understand exactly why you're doing this.

A college team is more likely to try and feature a one and done player than a professional Euro team.

Europe is full of white people and they are racist.

do you know how much poon you slay if you're a benchwarmer on kentuckys bench as opposed to superstar greek point guard? It's like asking why kids go live in tuscaloosa alabama as opposed to miami when miami is clearly 100x the city. It's bc you're a god in alabama if you play college football, if you live in miami nobody gives 2 shites even if you're the superstar.

More like 5 months. If you're a for sure 1 and done all you need to do us pretend to care about school from August - December.

My question is why play at all? For the guaranteed lottery picks like Ben Simmons and Malik Monk, why not just sign with an agent and spend the year working out with NBA trainers. It's only like six months.

Top agents would loan them money and they could do endorsements.

aside from all the cultural differences and difficulties that come with playing overseas

European basketball is almost completely different from high school/college. They'd have to learn a totally different game, not play a whole lot of minutes, and the teams don't want to invest their time and money doing that for a player to just leave after a year, 2 MAX

Two factors no one is mentioning:
1.) who says euro teams really want these guys? Europe is different than the USA, they like development. They aren't going to pay an unproven 18 year old big money for 1 season. Why would they? They don't want to be kentucky every year.

2.) hometown/ state street cred: if you go to Europe how much credibility does that get you compared to going to play for Duke, UNC, Kentucky, etc.? You go back home and you are a big dog around the neighborhood no matter how well you do. If you go to Europe and fail you could easily turn into a has been

The poster child for all of this should be Emmanuel Mudiay. He made a million plus in China and signed an endorsement deal (after he couldn't get into SMU). Then he went #7 in the draft. But he is a really tough kid and had a horrible upbringing. So most people aren't as strong mentally as he is..

I used to wonder why more guys didn't do what Brandon Jennings did and get a little dough and see the world while avoiding the farce of being in college for a year. But then I heard those Euro teams hate dealing with 18 year olds for a season. And it's fun being in college if you don't have to worry about graduating.

I think the overseas route will likely only continue to be a viable option for guys who simply cannot qualify through the NCAA Clearinghouse. We've seen two high profile guys go this route. Each of them had issues in terms of eligibility. As one person noted, Mudiay couldn't get into SMU due to eligibility concerns. Jennings also began looking at playing overseas when he got his initial SAT scores and when two assistant coaches that he was close to at Arizona left the program.

Needless to say, at this point, I doubt many guys will have the overseas option as anything more than a fallback if they can't qualify or have somewhat of a perfect storm scenario of potential eligibility issues along with other bumps in the road similar to Jennings.

Yep and iirc Jennings has his mom move up there with him the entire time he was there. So would a high school player rather be stuck with his mom in a country with no friends and where he doesn't understand the language or culture, OR enjoy being a college student for a year? I don't think a 75k contract to play overseas for a year would be worth it. Additionally, what if ihings don't work out? You just wasted a golden opportunity to get a free education. Seems like a no brainer and why it's very rare for guys to go that route
