Why don't high school bball stars play for a year in Europe rather than college?

If you're going to be a one-and-done in college, why not spend that year in Europe making money, rather than pretending to be in school for 9 months? Europe pays more than the Developmental league.

You'll probably get more training, since the NCAA limits coach-player time.

They don't want to live in a foreign country where they don't know the language/people/culture

Zero exposure is my guess. My guess is 98% of the high school players want the perks that come with being recruited and the perks that come with being a star for 9 months as opposed to being a nobody in a foreign country.

Because most kids coming out of highschool aren't ready to up and move to a different country. It's a pretty tough thing to do

Euro teams aren't keen on playing young guys. Especially young guys who they know aren't coming back

Frank Ntilikina is go be a top 10 pick this year 6'5 point guard in France. He plays 14 mins a game

If you were 18 years old would you want to live in a country where hardly anyone speaks the language and nobody knows wtf you are?

Plus as mentioned, exposure is big. You're going to get noticed and move up the draft ranks a lot more (presumably) by playing at a blue blood NCAA program than starting for Estonia.

Most HS kids probably aren't ready to go another country where they don't speak the language and live for a year.

Most high school young men are looking forward to slaying some hot cheerleader poon at Big State U. Be on tv.
Maybe learn some marketing. Cars coke clothes. M keh.

You go to France you are just a wage slave no different than the gardener who smiles, yes boss, no ingles.

meh. Nowadays there is plenty exposure in Europe and most of the guys are already noticed in high school through AAU. Going to Europe or China would be a route one could take but it definitely would he hard for an 18 year old to do which is why so few have done it. But the results haven't been bad

I would actually say the opposite. Several of the players who have gone that route have been exposed and lost in the shuffle. European teams play a different style of ball, with different rules. You will hardly touch the floor, getting paid on time or at all can be a problem as well. Go read up on Brandon Jennings experiences, and his case was a successful one.

So yeah, i'd rather just go live it up on a college campus as the man for 9 months.

But professional basketball players over there aren't looked at the same as college players here.

Also I don't think it's been mentioned enough that a lot of teams wouldn't want to sign them. Why sign a totally unproven teenager who's from a different country and is definitely leaving after a year?

As others have said, European teams want to win and some 18 year old with a big ego isn't going to fit into their plans. Miles Bridges would be riding the pine if he was in Europe versus the minutes he gets at Michigan State.

he went #10 in the draft. That is a success in regards to how going to Europe influences your draft ranking

It's a mixed bag, just like going to college is. But right now, going to Europe would not hurt your draft prospects. Maybe 15/20 years ago, but not anymore

See when I hear exposure I assume people mean in terms of marketability, which CBB >>>>>>> Europe.

You are 100% correct on what you mean though. These teams basically know who the lottery picks will be like 3-4 years in advance.

Like others have said:

Imagine stepping on campus as someone who will be a multi-millionaire in a year. You get to take easy arse classes with all sorts of people making sure you pass them. You will be welcomed back there whenever if you do actually want to ever do the whole school thing.

Or you could go somewhere where you don't know the language, new culture, where coaches are reluctant to play someone who will only be there a year, and are inconsistent in actually paying you.
