How does a player that is hitting .336/.437/1.053 not rank amongst the Top 100 prospects in the game of baseball?

I understand that California League is video game baseball, but Reed is more than holding his own in Corpus Christi (AA Texas League) with a .306/.402/.951 line in 29 games.

What am I missing?

I'm partial to Hacksaw Butch Reed.

Does it really matter where the kid is ranked? You should just be glad that he is playing well.

I've never understood the way they rank MLB prospects. I get that it's based on "potential", but still some of the ranking are head scratchers.

The scouts probably know more than you.

You mean to tell me that the 2014 Golden Spikes award winner and second round draft pick that is leading the minor leagues in HR's and batting .336/.437/1.053 doesn't belong in the top 100? There are guys that have barely even played in the minors ranked in the top 20.

I'm not saying he deserves to be ranked that high, but to not even be in the top 100 is odd.

This is just like the guy on the recruiting boards who complain that their high school recruit should be listed as a 5 star. Stars and rankings don't make the player.

Prospect lists can lag and they want to stick with guys who are high level prospects possibly longer than they should.

Who's rankings are we talking about and what was his signing bonus?

Baseball America at least seemingly puts heavy emphasis on signing bonuses when ranking prospects.

He's the 3rd ranked 1B on MLB.com

That's pretty lofty praise.

He's big and slow and doesnt play a premium position, which is prob why he isnt in the top 100(i think he should be, personally).

For this reason I understand him not being in the top 50...maybe not even the top 75. It's the not being in the top 100 that is just odd to me.

In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter though, so oh well.

The prospect rankings might not, but rest assured many Astros fans feel he's deserved a spot on the 25 man for a couple months now. Singleton is a bust, Carter has been assy, and Valbuena's a streaky 3B playing at first because him batting .212 left handed is still somehow better than Carter's .181.

I can see the "we don't want to throw him into the ocean too soon" situation like what happened with Zunino, but dammit Luhnow this is the season to take chances.

Val has actually been more consistent as of late

But, if anyone getting a chance this year it should be Tyler White

His bat speed isn't elite. One of the knocks against him I've been told. I think it's bs, as long as he's producing idgaf.

That OPS being the last line in the slash threw me off for a bit. I'm used to slugging going there. I was thinking holy shite this guy must be mashing.
