Why does Chris Paul always make the All-Defensive 1st Team?

Dude has made it 7 times in a row.

Patrick Beverley
Chris Paul
Kawhi Leonard
Draymond Green
Rudy Gobert

I have never once feared Chris Paul on the defensive end as a fan. All the other guys on this list clearly make it more difficult for teams to execute on offense.

Is the answer really just that Paul takes bad risks to rack up steals?

Because he's that good on defense . The dude almost had a quadruple double with steals against the clippers when he played for the hornets. You don't get that many steals just taking chances.

Allen Iverson made a living doing that while being a meh defender, sure you can.

That being said, the OP is wayyyy underrating how good Paul is at defense IMO.

He's not the best on-ball defender, but he is always in the passing lanes.

So you would rather have Tony Allen or Danny Green guarding your starting PG than Chris Paul?

The #1 responsibility isn't block shots or getting steals. The #1 responsibility on defense is not letting the offense do what it wants to do. Chris Paul is great at frustrating offenses. It just doesn't show up as obvious on TV as a dunk or block.

He's an elite defender. Sure he might get crossed the hell up by Curry, but he's still a very elite defender.

I'd rather have Tony Allen on defense than Patrick Beverly, does that mean Beverly is overrated and not that good?

Not sure where you're going with that hot take.

Pretty much this. He allows a 1.2% higher FG% than average, which isn't good, but his steals and on/off numbers speak for themselves.

I leave those decisons to Daryl and his group. My focus is elsewhere. If he ends up in CC i'll support him and he will be one of us. if not we'll remind people how he has never made WCF.

I'm not a huge Chris Paul fan, not just because of his attitude, but also because of his playing style. I think the Rockets would be better served by a guy like Kyle Lowry. If theyre going the PG route. Gordon Hayward is the real FA that would make the most sense, but doesn't look like it's going to be close.

Off the record

The team would be really really good. Elite of elite playmaking all 48 minutes in a dantoni offense. They would be a top 3 offense of all time. Prob not good enough to beat GSW though. But then again if CC signs milsap and not Paul they aren't good enough to beat GSW. BUT Better than everyone else in the conference.
