Why do you have Wilt Chamberlain in your top 5 all-time?

How many of you have ever seen him play 1 full game in it's entirety? Not highlights. Just ONE game?

I'm going to guess hardly anybody.

So my question is... how can you regard him so highly if you've never seen him play?

Couldn't you ask the same question in reverse?

"How can you have Wilt Chamberlain outside your top 5 if you've never watched a full game of his?"

People go off his stats, which are pretty incredible. He wasn't the winner or defender Bill Russell was, but he was pretty clearly an all-time great player.

I don't. Shaq, Hakeem, David Robinson, etc would destroy Wilt.

Yes you could... and I agree with the logic. How can you accurately rank him at all, whether in the top 5 or out of the top 5, if we've never seen him play?

It was a much different league back then. There were only 3 players in the league who were at least 6'9" tall. And there were only 8 teams in the entire league and a lot of players had other jobs. Basketball then wasn't drawing talent like it does now, even with only 8 teams. The pace was also MUCH faster back then meaning many more possessions (which leads to more stats). Players also played almost the full game back then. Wilt actually averaged more than 48 minutes per game one season.

How do you know? Once again, you've never seen him play even ONE full game. How can you compare them?

This logic is flawless. Same reason I think Einstein was a total hack. I never actually saw him derive any equations. And I simply won't take the word of any countless number of his contemporaries that attest to his genius.

I saw a bunch of his games.. A great player and its kinda unfair on where to rate him. He was just taller than anyone else when he played. I mean he avg. 50.4 ppg in a season... Great numbers but he wasn't playing against anyone his size except Bill Russell... I am sure not many saw him play either... BUT I would have him over Wilt because when it mattered most Russell WON..... I have Hakeem and Jabbar over Wilt as well...

Why doesn't anyone knock Shaq for the same reason? He was routinely playing against guys 50 lbs lighter.

There actually used to be plenty of full game footage on Wilt Chamberlain but unfortunately the NBA acted like bitches and took them all down. This is really the only game footage I can find of Wilt. LINK

His athleticism, fluidity, movement and coordination were absurd for a man of his size. He seems pretty crude offensively though. All of his unassisted baskets looked awkward as hell. I don't know why he didn't just play like Shaq by backing Russell in and overpowering him to the basket.

He has published works that we can read. Therefore we CAN asses his genius.

When I said size I meant Height... But you have a point. Shaq got away with shovimg people out of the way A TON.... But he was a beast and I won't put him in my top 5 centers of all-time.

My whole point is people rank these players without ever even seeing them play 1 game.

Kids putting Jordan #1 who never saw him play would fall under that same idea. The same goes for kids who say Jordan was overrated when they've never seen him play.

Long story short, 99% of these player rankings lists are bullshite because 99% of people have never seen people like Wilt, Oscar, Russell, etc. play just one full game. Not ONE!

I did see Wilt play when I was younger. Incredible physical specimen. One of the greatest passing centers ever, in addition to his scoring and rebounding.

No.

Hakeem could give Wilt some problems with his quickness and footwork, but he'd have a hell of a time defending Wilt.

Robinson gives up 50-60 pounds to Wilt in the post, so he's not gonna stop Wilt from scoring. Would have some success taking Wilt away from the basket.

Shaq and Wilt: Physically equal. Would be a battle of T-Rex's in the post, but Wilt's offensive game was more varied than Shaq's.

JMHO.

Wilt AVERAGED over 50 points per game in a season. Also, he could run a 1:59 800 as a seven footer. There is no one else that height in world history that could ever do that. Wilt is one of the most uniquely gifted athletes of all time.

If you wanna go with this the MY list would be the most accurate because I saw most of these guys play more than one game.....
I have it like this...

MJ
Magic
Jabbar
Russell
Hakeem

I guess not......... Baseball is A little different though.... Numbers matter wa more in Baseball history than in any other sport..... Mainly because NOBODY has come close to what Cobb and Ruth and Hornsby did....
