Still play their starters in week 17? You're basically risking injury to your players to try and win a game that's more meaningless than the preseason, hurting your draft position in the process.

There's only 53 players on the roster and the players want to boast their stats

By the same token, why do teams eliminated from playoff contention play their starters at all? Because it's their job.

the majority of the players are fighting to keep their jobs

Brees will start Sunday to get to 5K yards. He could rest and his TD strealk would stay alive

I'm sure the NFL has a policy that teams should play all out in these siruations

Does anyone else recall the last game of '82? I seem to recall Baltimore and another team were the two worst and were playing each other for the #1 pick -- that is, the rights to John Elway. Baltimore -- the Colts -- "lost" and won the first pick

Am I remembering this right?

this. When you miss the playoffs, everyone's job is on the line. And winning one game won't really screw up your position that much.

Competetiveness and pride. These athletes made it this far so you have to know how much those two things mean to them.

I'm sure those players that are getting paid based on putting up stats feel that way.

Shite why even play the game? Get the offseason party started early.

In all seriousness, they have fantasy football league championships that week.

Ratings, attendance and contract incentives. Basically, money.

I doubt this has anything to do with it.

Always play to win, EVERY second of EVERY game you are in. If you don't, I don't want you on my team.
