Why do B-ball Coaches seem brighter than Fball Coaches?

Ever notice this? Basketball coaches are usually very well spoken and seem, for the most part, very bright. Football coaches seem like the stereotypical? "dumb jocks". Why is this? Maybe it's the suits? We are more up close and personal with them during a game?
Not sure how I feel about baseball managers. They just seem to be...there. Taking up space and lacking any personality, outside a very few, and even then that was back in the day.

I have always thought this. Other than top guys like Saban/Belichick/Meyer, football coaches seem like they are mostly glorified gym teachers. I feel like 90% of CBB coaches would be destroying in business or the courtroom.

Theory: It's hard to break in to high level college coaching without having played at a high level. Not impossible, but difficult enough that most coaches at least played in college.

In football, it's hard to succeed at a high level without at least a certain degree of recklessness and lack of forethought. That attracts a different sort of dude than basketball, just due to the nature of the game.

Football coaches are salesmen and managers.

Basketball is a thinking man's game.

If not for the game of football, most football coaches would be high school gym teachers making $35k a year. Just look at the way most manage the clock at the end of a game or their handling of timeouts. 10 year old Madden players are light years ahead of most coaches at both.

the fluidity and constant motion/action of basketball takes a certain brain to fully master, especially in terms of adaptation and innovation

the coaches who do similar things in football are usually offensive-minded coaches, who are much more similar to basketball coaches in terms of their aura/look. defense is still mostly about discipline and effort, so your DCs have more of a motivational, "gym teacher" aura about them in general

i mean even a guy like pete carroll is that "rah rah" motivational type

Faster paced game, no 40 seconds between plays to decide what to do next.

big part of football is discipline. managing 50+ players. 10+ staff. need an authoritative figure.

I feel like most basketball coaches actually have a personality. Most football coaches try to outdo the other coaches with clichés and coach speak.

yeah basketball requires more fluid intelligence while football is more strategical intelligence

football has become so rote for so many coaches, esp during the season. it's all about repetition and consistency (unless you're the pats)

I think Belechik is a master of repetition. It seems to me his game plan doesn't change much. However, his focus on execution is 2nd to none.

I picture them running every play in their playbook in practice till it's done perfectly, blocking assignments, decision making for backs, quick shifty receivers who run perfect routes, etc.

They just seem to do the basics of football better than everyone else.

But why would he even try to change it when what he does works so well?

I feel like no one changes their gamplan up week to week more than NE.

1 week you see them come out and throw the ball 24 of their 1st 25 passes. The next week you see them come out the gates much more balanced. 2015 with Blount's carries were all over the place it seemed just purely based on gameplan.

Look at the difference in size of coaching staffs between the two sports. Basketball head coaches have to do more actual coaching- head football coaches can get away with being more of a "program manager" and less of an x's and o's guy.

maybe they just have the most ridiculously-sized playbook and week-to-week they focus based on opponents. that fits both sides of this argument

And what type of play do they run with their other pass?
