Why did the Jays burn Price in relief in a lopsided game yesterday?

I tuned out playoff baseball for the rest of the day after the Stros shite their game away so I'm sure it's been discussed. Why would they do this and not save him for Game 5?

The Astros should have burnt someone when up 6-2 yesterday.

They should literally set the bullpen on fire. But that's not what this thread is about

Unfortunately, my first thought.

Passive aggressive move by Gibbons to say Price is not the guy he wanted pitching Game 5.

There is no reason I wouldn't roll with Price in a Game 5 of 5. I don't get it.

They had to be planning on using Stroman all along though. We'll see how that works soon enough I guess.

Price has only 1 win in post season I thought as a starter. It was his pen day. I think it sets him up for game 1 though next series.

I wouldn't care. If you trade for that guy and pay him all of that money and he loses two games in a five game series (when he may win the Cy Young), so be it. But, you'll be kicking yourself if Stroman lays an egg. Price did admit after Game 1 that he was a nervous nelly, though.

I would not have burned him either, but that is the only explanation I can come up with.

You're in an elimination game. Imagine you save him for Game 5 then never make the Game 5...

It's really puzzling - only thing I can think is that secretly they prefer Stro to Price and needed a way to (somewhat) save face for Price.

I can't see a scenario in which they break the bank this offseason to keep him around when they deliberately use him in a blowout rather than save him for the biggest game in 20 years

The Jays had that game won. You can look at Houston and say "oh but look" but that's a convenient excuse. You could have also used Stro in relief rather than your "ace" David Price but that's not what Gibbons did.

He clearly prefers Stro.

Price has never won a post season start in his entire career and four of those losses have come against Texas. For some reason the Rangers just have his number.

Stroman was on fire for most of the game he pitched against us and knowing baseball its a big statement for a manager to go ahead and pitch Price and pretty much let Stroman, who is a young guy, know that game 5 is all his. That's a confidence booster if you've ever pitched before.

To me it makes total sense, but I don't buy that Price is not going to be available at all tomorrow. It wouldn't surprise me if he is maybe used for an inning or against one or two lefties if need be.

Gallardo should be starting for the Rangers instead of Hamels in my opinion

He has dominated the Jays this year and the Jays are a right handed dominant lineup.

While I don't necessarily agree, your argument for that is spot on. Gallardo has been great against Toronto this season and is actually 3-0 against them I believe.

Only reason they're going with Hamels is because he's been here before and has been great over his last several starts and actually throws strikes. I'd assume Yovani will be used if Toronto gets 3 runs in the first few innings.

They were up 7-1. They could at least let Dickey roll a little longer before bringing him in or go with their normal long guy. I get it if it was a close game but that specific situation seemed odd

Gallardo has been lights out and has better stuff than Hamels when he's throwing well.

Hamels is going to get raked tomorrow.

I don't see that at all. Gallardo has less than 6 K/9 this year and got swings and misses on only 6.5% of his pitches. Hamels had over 9 K/9 and gets swings and misses on over 13% of his pitches.

The Jays do absolutely mash lefties, but I think you have to throw Hamels.

At that point why bother?

If Hamels does his get 1-2 outs then give up 1-2 runs like he's done in the first three innings of his last three starts, the Rangers will have accomplished the biggest choke job since their 2011 WS choke job.

I would start Gallardo.
