Why did Shaquille O'Neal have a Reebok endorsement and not Nike as a rookie?

MJ
Pippen
Barkley
David Robinson
Penny Hardaway

All had Nike deals at some point in the 90's, but not Shaq. Aside from the obvious, money, was there another rationale behind this?

dunno about the endorsements, however, he and daddy Dale and Jim Talbot made some big $$$$ off of real estate in the greater B R area, in fact some of the same places you normally trash on the OT.

They were the 2 largest phenomenons at the time. Nike had MJ. Reebok threw a boatload of cash for Shaq. Also, Reebok wasn't some crap company. Shaq, Kemp, and Iverson all had deals with Reebok.

For those that may have been too young to have seen these at the time, or simply missed them...it was a really good campaign.

Nike didn't offer him his own shoe. Reebok did.

That he'd be the face of Reebok. Not much different than Kobe going with Adidas out of the gate.

Reebok was big in the 90s. There's a good chance if you're a 90s kid you had a pair of Pumps. Our basketball team wore Reebok with the honeycomb shite in the soles.

Exactly.. Jordan was the only one with his own shoe and the would not commit to a signature shoe....probably worked out for everyone, big men do not sell shoes, and Shaq makes a ton liscensing the cheap shoes.... his deal with Reebok did not last long and he hated them just as much as Nike until a couple of years ago when he jumped on the retro train.

Same reason Steph is with Under Armour and D Wade is with Li Ning. They have the opportunity to be the face of a brand

I believe Shaq, thanks to his dad's advice, also required that shoes with his name on it be more affordable. His dad always harped that most of his fans can't afford $100+ shoes, so he needs to sell shoes that they can afford.

I'm not sure if that was the case for his Reebok contract, but it was definitely the case later when he built his own brand.

Like I said, that was the case later when he built is own brand. I wasn't sure what the costs were when he was with Reebok.
