They are even. Marino with the quick release, Elway with the bazooka for an arm and scrambling ability. They were both money at the end of the game unlike Aikman. Elway and Marino played much of their careers with weak defenses and no running game so they were in similar situation. Elway was more capable of taking over a game by himself though but I still rate them even.

If I own random NFL team and I can choose either at the age of 22, I'm drafting Elway.

You put Marino, Montana, Young, or Moon on those teams and Denver wins the SB hands down every one of those years.

I disagree with this. Montana was great but look at the team he had around him. I don't think Marino does it either. Young had a cast of all-stars aroung him in his SB year. MOON?????? AAHHHH NO.

Career Season Averages for 16 games:

Elway -
Yards: 3525
Passing %: 56.9
TD: 20.5
INT: 15.5
Rating: 79.9

Marino -
Yards: 4057
Passing %: 59.4
TD: 27.8
INT: 16.7
Rating: 86.4

Marino had
-more game winning drives
-more fourth quarter comebacks
-a higher TD%
-a higher yards/attempt
-sacked at a MUCH lower rate
-much higher net yards per attempt
-much higher yards per game
-a lower interception percentage

The only two stat where Elway has claim is Yards per completion and that says more about the receivers. He has Marino edged out 12.5 > 12.4.

13 out of 14 QB stats belong to Marino.

WINNER: Marino.

No kidding. You could give those denver teams ANY qb and it would not have made a difference.

JOhnson tried to draft him rb's. Avery, J. Johnson, and Cecil were no slouches in college. Just didn't pan out. Will never understand why Shula didn't get him a good rb.

No kidding:

1997: 1750 yards 15 TDs
1998: 2008 yards 21 TDs

Give Marino that.

You can throw those carreer #'s out Marino always had better coaching and talent around him than Elway[pre Davis]

But in your world how come Marino only got 1 Miami team to a SB?

Because in my honest opinion, and this drove me crazy growing up a fan of Dan Marino and always wanting him to win a Super Bowl, if you took him off some of those 90's Dolphins teams you'd be looking at the current situation with the Colts.

So are you invalidating Elway's two Super Bowls when comparing him to Marino? Because Davis was more than just a talent in those two seasons. He put up, probably, the greatest consecutive rushing seasons in history those two years.

Because Defense is half of football and Denver's was consistently better than Miami's.

A QB's job is to make plays on 3rd down and keep drives going. Elway did that better than Marino, and it wasn't close
is there actual proof of this?

Serious question, I'd like to see that kind of thing in numbers, not just opinion. That's something that could sway my opinion here.

No. The closest proof is in the stats I posted. And they argue otherwise.

Elway. Took his team to 5 sb's 3 basically by himself.

And took a big dump when he got there every time.

Yeah because they weren't VERY GOOD teams...that's the point! Plus the NFC owned the AFC during that era. People keep saying...you could put any QB on those Super Bowl winning Denver teams...well not really, Elway's accurate "gun deep ball opened up the running game...but you put any other QB on those 3 Super Bowl losing Denver teams and Denver doesn't sniff the Super Bowl. Elway put those teams on his back. I've never seen a QB so consistently take such slop to the biggest game without Pro Bowl players or a great cast around him.

I just don't get how a guy, Marino, who was better than Elway in basically every single passing category you can imagine couldn't do what Elway did.

That doesn't make any sense to me. Elway is putting up worse stats every single week than Marino would, but Marino couldn't do it?

That's because individuals don't win Super Bowls. How is that so hard for most everyone to understand? Dilfer "won" a Super Bowl and he couldn't start for my kid's high school team.

Exactly.

None of those guys crowning 2 titles have Big Ben as a better QB than Manning or Brees, or at least I hope they don't lol.
