In a lineup full of rookies, are you kidding?

I am thrilled about Bryant, and I fully believe he will be a great hitter, but they are kids. Why would we believe that the Cubs lineup would be great with half of them three+ years away from their prime? High strikeout team with loads of potential.

I am thrilled they are good this year. I think they can be great by 2017.

Cubs 28.3
Astros 28.6

I don't care about average age. Look at how young the core is.

Rizzo 25
Russell 21
Bryant 23
Castro 25
Bryant 23
Soler 23

Don't forget Schwarber, maybe the best pure hitter of them all.

What's discouraging to me is the veterans on the team like Fowler, Castro, Montero and Coughlan are all hitting well below their career averages. Of that group only Coughlan has shown signs he might get to his career benchmark before season's end.

I was hoping those would even out, Rizzo would get back on track and we'd get enough of an occasional bump from the young talent to move the needle a bit offensively.

But I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the Cubs just aren't going to rally offensively this year and we'll probably end up at about.500 which is about where I saw us to start the year.

But the future is very bright. Kind of reminds me of the young core the Astros brought up with Biggio, Bagwell, Caminiti and Luis Gonzales et al that struggled when young but eventually gave the Stros some very good years.

Schwarber 22

Forgot to include him on that list. That's why you play for the present without sacrificing the future.

What? Coghlan is hitting .257 and his career average is .271. He is above his career average in OBP and SLG and has already set a career high for a season in HRs and he is one off of his career high in SBs. And he isn't even playing LF full time. I'm not sure how anyone on the planet could be discouraged by Coghlans performance in 2015.

Hence my clarification that he was the only one with a shot at getting back to that benchmark.

Caminiti unmistakably and Bagwell almost certainly though never implicated.

Point being those guys all came up young together and took their lumps early but enjoyed some success together down the road. And they certainly weren't alone on the roid train back then.

Um ok well your comment was that you are discouraged by his performance. It would take a pretty ignorant/clueless view point to be discouraged by anything Chris Coghlan has done this season. Just saying.

I mean no kidding Coghlan has a chance to "get back to his career numbers" considering he is right at or breaking his career averages in almost every single offensive category.

Not really, I pointed out that collectively the veterans were all hitting well below their career averages. If you don't consider .14 points below significant enough fair enough, and I did qualify it by saying Coughlan was rallying. I could have been clearer in setting that out. He did hit .284 last year.

I think his significant injury skewed his career numbers a bit after his great rookie year.
