He was the golf version of Ted Williams.

Ahead of his time.

I think it's Tom Watson.

Hogans injuries kept his window too short to be considered top 3

Hard to compare guys that lost prime years to the war tho and I have no problem with people that consider him top 2/3

Babe Didrickson

Outstanding women's golfer and athlete.

Would be a separate discussion from the mens.

Check Annika's remarks when she played once in a mens pro tourney I think the Bryon Nelson. Her score was respectable but not close to the mid level mens players. It's been years and I don't recall the exact details.

1. Tiger

2. Jack

That’s my only contribution.

Jack is lucky prime Tiger wasn’t around to mow his fat arse down.

In the modern era, I would agree. And getting it all done when Tiger was in his prime is just more evidence to his greatness.

I'm a huge Jack fan boy full disclosure but I always put it like this - prime Tiger is the best ever but I do think the best players of Tiger's era tended to wilt at the sight of Tiger - the best memorable battles Tiger got in majors were from the likes of Rocco Mediate and Scott May, Rich Beam and Yang were two that even managed to best him.

I think Jack more often got the best of the best in his era coming in second in epic battles with Trevino and Watson, 19 second place finishes in majors for Jack.

I'd put it like this, the fields were deeper for Tiger no doubt and when he was at his best he was the best ever. But the better players of Jack's era - the Trevino's, Floyd's, Watson's, Player's and Palmer's were I think stronger.

It's between Player, Hogan, and Hagen. I would lean towards Player but who knows how many more majors Hagen would have won if the Masters had been invented when he was playing.

Jack competed against a handful of players that had a legitimate chance to win. Same dudes every week.

Tiger competed against 100 of the world’s best weekly and dominated them.

Jack dominated like 4 dudes.

Level of competition wasn’t close.

Jack and the rest of the golfers weren't chasing records unlike many golfers are today.

Lets be honest, Tiger entered the PGA at the perfect exact time to dominate.

All the old stars...well, were frankly old. Fuzzy Zoeller was still playing for christsakes and had a mentality of yesteryear.

Fat old guys and Tiger comes along. What did you think was gonna happen? It took some years for a bunch of new young bucks to make noise and challenge Tiger but he definitely joined the PGA playing against semi-retirees and capitalized on it. I mean who wins the Masters by that many strokes unless his competition has one foot in the grave.

There’d actually be a compelling argument for Mickelson if not for the six second place finishes at the US Open. If he’d pulled it out there just once it would’ve given him a career grand slam and seven majors to his name. I’ll never forget watching the meltdown at Winged foot in 2006.

Not reading the whole thread but anyone that has Tiger even in their top 5 doesn’t know the history of golf
