I think the Ghost Runner rule in Baseball is the single most dumb arse rule I’ve ever seen in sports. It takes away from the game entirely. I understand wanting to avoid 17 inning nights, but who cares that’s baseball.

A game can go to 5 OT’s in Basketball, and same thing in Football. You don’t see football teams lining up a WR 5 yards past the line of scrimmage in OT. You don’t see a Center posted up in the paint on a tip off in OT.

“Hey let’s play 9 innings of baseball, then post up a runner at 2B to start every half inning after that.”

The MLB has a few things I don’t agree with, but the Ghost Runner rule really grinds my gears. Anybody else feel the same way?

Why do you call them "ghost runners" when they are plainly visible?

Don’t they make teams go for 2 after so many OTs?
I don’t like the rule either, btw.

Because that’s the name of the rule.

Another reason this rule is dumb.

It sucks

It sorta made sense in the pandemic since the circumstances were weird but it should have gone away the next season after that farce was over

There is no reason to start it in the 10th
If you are going to do it make like in the 14th

A complete overreaction to a twice in a decade event

NFL can tie and College runs alternating 2 pt conversions in OT 3 and beyond. Soccer can tie and in elimination games kicks PKs, hockey goes to shootout. Noone wants neverending ots anymore, we have lives.

It’s fine with me for regular season. Would not support it for postseason. One I really didn’t like and glad they got rid of is the 7 inning doubleheaders.

How many extra inning games before the rule change went 17 innings anyway? A couple a year?

I think it was a great idea. After 9 innings fans started to leave the ballpark, viewers turned off the tv. Who wants to spend 4-5 hours watching a game?

A regulation game is 9 innings. If you can look at extras/OT for what it really is - a necessary tiebreaker since neither team got the job done in regulation - a quirk like this is easier to digest

As alluded to above, nearly all form of regular season overtimes have quirks that make the OT period arcade-like

- CFB is essentially the same exact concept as MLB with ghost runners - teams start in scoring position without having to earn it like they do in regulation, with completely new strategy based on field position
- NFL has a shortened period with bizarre asymmetric sudden death rules
- NHL goes from 20 minutes of 5v5 to 5 minutes of 3v3, and a shootout follows that doesn't represent the nature of the game
- Soccer in non-league competitions has a short OT period and then penalty kicks that don't represent the nature of the game
- NBA is largely untouched just with a shortened period, but the overall product sucks arse and is largely unwatchable

It's maybe a silly rule to start immediately in the 10th as opposed to 11th or 12th...but in a 162-game regular season? I can't hate it. Again, it's a tiebreaker

As long as those quirks disappear in the postseason to ensure the game is won the way the sport is meant to be played, that's what matters. Almost all of the above (including the ghost runner) disappear in the playoffs

But you might see them start at their opponent’s 25 yard line. And you might call that “scoring position.”

To be fair the rule is pretty bad. I’ve liked a good bit of the other changes but that one is bad

Blame the players. That rule change is almost universally loved by them so it’s never going away. Also, the NHL has different rules for the regular season and postseason (5 minute OT + Penalties in the regular season compared to continuous 20 minute OT periods in the playoffs) and I never hear any complaints about how dumb the NHL is for having different rules in the regular season and the postseason.

I think the rule is kinda dumb but playing a bunch of extra innings in a regular season with 162 games is even worse.

I would rather the game end in a tie
At least play the 10th and 11th before doing it

I would think play through 12 (equivalent to 1/3rd of a regular game) before making any changes such as a ghost runner or tie.

Saw a weird stat sometime last year, never validated myself, that on average less than 10% of games go to extras. And to top it off only 1% of games go past the 12th.
