Man, I miss the days when the Cubs were on every day. I bet the ratings plummet when the Sox or on.

the Sox always seem to be on a weekend... better for the First Fan to watch. I don't know if the White House gets DirecTv or Dish.

But even WGN know's that the ratings are always at least double when the Cubs play, but I'll use a term I abhor, political correctness...because to some extent it applies here.

I've always wondered. Had Harry stayed with the White Sox and WGN had chosen to show White Sox games every day if the Sox would be the universally popular team.

I don't think it's as simple as all that though as I do think Wrigley and Wrigleyville have more charm and are much more fan-friendly but the Cubs quite frankly were not a good draw before Harry and Cable swept the country in the early 80's.

Those two factors combined are far and away the NO. 1 reason for the Cubs nationwide populatrity today.

I can honestly say I was a Cub fan before cable, but I don't think too many others outside Chicago can.

Blame the Cubs, not WGN. LINK

Or just pick another team. If you're a Cubs fan, you probably picked them on a whim.

hardly a whim

so many people around the country are braves or cubs fans because those were the only games on TV when they were kids

That's the reason I'm a diehard Cubs fan. Growing up that was the only team you could consistantly watch on during the days of summer. Dawson, Sandberg, Dunston were who I grew up idolizing

big difference... the braves would be on at night and would have games from the half-full fulton county stadium...

Since the Tribune doesnt own the Cubs anymore and the Tribune owns WGN, why would they sho0w a lot of Cub games. It is just like when Time-Warner bought TBS they slowly stopped showing Braves Games.

I'm not a Cubs fan, but I used to love coming home from school in the '80s and watching the games in the afternoon. You never knew what Harry might say.

I'll never forget the time he started talking about guys going overseas to play with "Japs".

I can only speak for myself but I picked them at the age of 7. Watched Ron Santo hit a homerun onto the street and a cop caught it on Waveland on the Saturday game of the week.

As a kid I just thought that was the best thing. Fell in love with the team and the stadium then, so I guess you could say that was a whim, but it was 37 years ago so I've been a Cub fan as long as I've been an LSU fan.

Oh and true to form the Cubs blew the lead and lost the the Big Red Machine in it's prime that day. Some things never change.
