I dislike all of those about equally, except Brazil and Argentina.

Maradona sucks, but not enough to offset Messi's awesomeness.

It has got to be England. I mean come on. The headlines in their papers would be priceless.

I want the US to beat a traditional European power 3-0 in the first round. France and Italy would be my favorite choices, but I wouldn't mind Holland, Germany, or England either. We've already beaten Portugal and Spain in the past 7 years, but that would be fine, too.

Here are the last matches that I can think of between the US and the traditional powers.

Spain: US won 2-0
Portugal: US won 3-2
Italy: US tied 1-1
Germany: US lost 1-0, with a controversial no-call on a handball
England: It's been a while, I have no clue.
France: Same.

That's not bad at all, actually.

I wouldn't mind seeing one of our guys take C. Ronaldo out in the 90th minute of a 2-0 US win against Portugal.
We all know we're going to get at least one red card in the WC anyway. Let's make it worthwhile.

I think it comes down more to

winning a trophies and having international star power with players at top 4 domestic clubs.
