He's having an incredible year, and was having a stellar rookie season before an injury that took him awhile to come back from.

I think he's been the best safety this year, but is one year enough to declare him the best safety overall in the game? Is he top 5?

Safety seems to be pretty weak in the NFL right now, without many bonafide stars. I think Honey Badger could be the next star.

He's becoming an absolute superstar. I'd love for someone to name 5 safeties they'd rather have going forward. It's amazing the amount of plays he can make.

From earlier this year.

quote:

The Arizona Cardinals’ Tyrann Mathieu leads all corners with an overall ranking of 10.5. But here’s the thing: Mathieu isn’t a cornerback. He’s a safety.

Yet with as much slot corner as he’s played in Arizona’s nickel defense, he may as well be considered a cornerback. Of 308 snaps this season, he’s played 203 at various cornerback positions -- from slot on both sides to wide on both sides.

“I like them both,” Mathieu said. “Corners get paid more. I don’t know what to say because I like playing safety and obviously I want to be one of the best safeties in the league, but I feel like I don’t really have that chance because I play cornerback, I play nickel, I’m playing on the outside. I don’t know, man.”

IIRC he's played more nickel/slot than safety this year.

Still he's playing like a top flight DB this year. I think he's definitely in the top 10 convo for all DBs.

He's not even the best safety on the team. Rashad Johnson in the house!

Ok just kidding. TM7 is the shite.

I always thought he was an interesting player at LSU. He's not a pure corner in the mold of Peterson. If you stick him at corner and leave him there, it limits his best skill which can only be labeled as "play making".

His role at LSU utilized him in a way that he could be moved around the field and wreck shite. I haven't been able to watch a whole lot of him in the NFL but safety with some time at corner seems like a great fit for the skillset he features.

I didn't realize he was playing safety but sounds like they are using him all over. That's a great plan. He is not a pure corner and not a pure safety. He is a freak that can make plays though.

He doesn't really play safety so no he's not the best safety in the league

he plays 66% of the time at CB, the rest at safety. He's a cornerback

This. The guy has a knack for making plays, which can't be coached.
