Before today the 2 I will never forget are Norman and Van de Velde.

To me Van de Velde will always be the worst. That frog stepped onto 18 needed only a double to win. Any sane person hits 8 iron, 8 iron, wedge, 2 putt for bogey, Claret Jug winner. But this moron grabs the driver.

Not only did he make bad swings, he made bad decisions.

Ultimately Norman and Young Jordan just hit shitty shots, decisions not really bad.

Spieth had one awful hole. I wouldn't even call it a collapse. Norman was a collapse. Van de velde was just a choke job.

Van de Velde is still worst. I can't look at the 3 in a vacuum. Spieth has won majors and likely still has a lot in front of him. Norman also won a few majors. That was Van de Veldes best shot at a major and he pissed down his leg. That context alone makes it worse than the other 2

Jordan played his final 9 in even par with the sole exception of the 12th hole. That's why I say it's a one hole thing. If he would have gone in the tank after the quad, then sure it's a collapse

I talked to a friend who sat on #16 the last two days. He said Spieth's putt on #16 wasn't easy and he saw a lot of players miss something similar.

That said, you're right. He was shaky going into #12. That trainwreck had been building.

Spieth's only melt is burning $100 bills to make him a grilled cheese sandwich

Bull, it's more of a collapse if you go amateur on one hole than slowly give ground over 18 holes.

Spieth had a 5-shot lead over the winner going into the back 9 - and after 3 holes it all went bye-bye.

Norman had a 6-shot lead entering Sunday. He didn't give it all away in a few holes like Spieth.

McIlroy at the Masters in 2011 was the 54 Hole leader and shoots 4th round 80.

Spieth has finished 2nd, 1st and 2nd in his three masters.

I'm going to say he will be ok.

That Frenchie's melt at Carnoustie will be tough to top. One of those "I remember where I was" sports moments for me

1) Van de Velde '99 British Open - never won a Major and wow what he did to lose.
2) Norman '96 Masters - never won the Masters
3) McIlroy '11 Masters - only major missing from his grand slam. Still has a lot of golf left in front of him.
4) Speith - has already won a Masters. Lot of golf to be played for Jordan.
5) Mickelson '06 US Open - needed par on 18 to win (no gimme), bogey to tie and playoff w/ Ogilvy. And Phil made double. Only Major missing from his grand slam. Granted this was a single hole and less margin for error than others but this will haunt him.

Not to make light of Van de Velde's choke, but didn't he hit a clutch and difficult putt to go into a playoff? I was pretty young at the time and can't quite remember, but I believe that's correct.

it's a straight up choke/collapse/whatever you want to call it ... that said, sam sneed, arnold palmer, lefty, etc have all had late sunday/single hole collapses that cost them a major ... even ben hogan missed a very short putt on the 72nd to get into a masters playoff ...

Most of y'all are too young to remember Palmer at Olympic in the '66 U.S. Open, but that was a huge collapse.

IIRC, he had a 7 shot lead over Casper midway the 4th round.
