They are paid. They work hard and bust their arse on the field and are repaid with a full ride scholarship. Media exposure and a chance to make it to the next level for millions. O yea and a degree of their choice. that's pretty substantial payment IMO

100% agree with you, people lose site of the value of a diploma which is supposed to the reason they go to college to get a degree. Remember they are called student-athletes for a reason not athlete-students. LSU's cost of an education pales to others but if you are an out-of-state student at Texas just for tuition "not room & board" you are talking $36,000.00 for the year. At what point is that not a payment to a player? If the student-athlete works hard to graduate that diploma will help them earn money for the rest of their lives.

That being said, I don't have a problem with a stipend within reason. If it makes their lives a little bit easier and hopefully helps keep them out of trouble it is well worth it. But I would like to keep it as close to amateur status as possible. The NFL is for paying players, college should not be!!!

Just a thought, do you think people could sue the NBA or NFL for having their age limits?

They could sue, but they have no chance of winning. Those age limits were part of the collective bargain.

I think a full scholarship is enough payment.

They bring in way more than they get. Exponentially.
They also work more than any student trying to pay their way.

You are kidding right? You are going to bring in that stale argument?

What you seemed to be forgetting is this is supposed to be about education!! What they are getting in return for their services is the opportunity to get a free education, over a 4 year time frame "assuming you stay until graduation" at a school like Cal-Berkley or Stanford you are talking $200,000 in the form of a payment as free tuition. Each school is different I admit but the value of a diploma in the work place is different also.

You couple that free tuition "room & board need to be added also" on top of the potential of what the diploma will earn you over and above a high school education. And that is why you play football or any other sport in college. You also have the outside possibility that you can turn that sport you play into a profession "NFL, NBA, MLB etc...." but the reason you go to college is to get an education.

Look at the graphs in this link, that will show you the difference between having a college education and not. This is why you go to school for free and play sports for the school, to get this type of advantage in life after college!!!

They ALREADY have hardship funds to cover ALL of the cost which you posted about.(up to $4,500 a year) They
also can and get Pell Grants $5,400 per year. And ALL non freshman recieve a stipend for room and board around
$1,100 to $1,400 a MONTH depending on the school.
Plua ALL get $500 clothing allowence.
Added all up and it can be up to 20K a year CASH just for
expenses. Does not included tuition and books.

Yup

I was only on partial scholarship but I still was plenty taken care of with all of the allowances and stipends. I am opposed to paying.

If you pay players, what is the point of collegiate institutions having athletic departments. At that point, they are just sponsors. The University of Alabama would simply be a sponsor at that point, like how Bwin is to Real Madrid and Aon is to Manchester United.
