re: When should the Rangers be sellers?

Lewis
Look up his playoff stats. Having him out is a big concern because he is an innings eater. He isn't going to put up Darvish numbers, but it would be nice to have him instead of Grimm or Tepesch.
quote:
Soria
When your starting rotation starts getting worn down and you have to go to your bullpen, it would be nice to have a guy like Soria healthy in the bullpen, instead of someone like Kirkman.
quote:
Ogando
He was a reliever last year because there wasn't really a place for him, but the Rangers converted him from the outfield to be a starter and he was having a very good year until 2 DL trips. Also, he went to the All-Star game in 2011, a year in which he threw 169 innings. Not a specialized reliever.
quote:
Perez
21 year old left handed rookie that can throw 95+. He got injured after a very good spring and he had all but locked up the 4th or 5th spot. Instead, we have to use Justin Grimm.
quote:
Feliz
He can also be a spot starter. And with Nathan firmly entrenched, Feliz would probably be a long reliever of some sort. Again, depth in the bullpen is always a good thing.
Pitching injuries may not hurt the team for awhile, but eventually they catch up, especially to the bullpen. Add in the fact that the offense can't even hit off of a tee right now and that explains why a Rangers starting pitcher has yet to win a game in June.

4 All-Star pitchers that have missed significant time, if not the whole year.
They have a winning record against 3 teams that are over .500 and haven't exactly played the toughest schedule.
The injuries suck but they knew Lewis, Feliz, and Soria would be out for a while before the season even started.

They knew that yes, but they weren't counting on losing Harrison, Perez, and Ogando as well.
Injuries happen and I'm not making excuses for this team right now. The pitching is still decent enough to win games, but when the offense scores 4 runs in a 4 game series, not even Sandy Koufax can help them win at this moment. And that is where the main problem lies for the Rangers.

Lewis:
He crossed 200 inning barrier twice in his career and 100 inning barrier 4 times. He is 33 years old so he isn't exactly a young pup. His playoff numbers are nice as a small sample size, but this is the regular season where he hasn't been dominated. You can replace him with a Triple A guy *(which they have done) who would put up similar ERA/Innings.
Soria:
Again, he hasn't been healthy since 2011... I would hope you really were not counting on him, and then in 2011 he sucked as well. Again he can be replaced by a cheaper alternative
Ogando:
in 2011 he was great in first half (reason he earned All-Star nod) and then wore down in second half which is part of reason they shifted him back to a reliever as his second half ERA was almost 5. He has shuffled back and forth between rotation and pen and again he is a guy you are not sure what to expect over 32 starts.
Perez:
So you replace a 21 year old pitcher who throws hard with a 24 year old pitcher who throws equally as hard.... the difference is one being left handed and younger....
Here is his scouting report if you don't believe me, "Grimm's repertoire is fastball/curveball/changeup, with the fastball generally being in the low-90s, though it can touch 95-96 mph, and the curveball being a potential plus pitch. His changeup is a work in progress, and like a lot of the Rangers' A-ball pitchers, how that third pitch develops will likely determine where Grimm's future lies"
Feliz:
Bullpen depth can be filled by a bunch of unknowns who then become stars, look at the A's, O's, even Braves who cast a bunch of young arms into important roles and what them thrive. Losing a player as talented a Feliz does hurt but they have others who have that potential (you just never know till they get in the spotlight)

Lewis was a different pitcher after coming back from Japan. He was on pace for 200+ innings in 2012 before being injured. And seeing as only 30 pitchers last year pitched 200+ innings, I would say not any AAA pitcher can do that.
Perez has been ranked in the top 100 prospects for the last 3 years. Grimm was ranked as the #9 prospect for the Rangers while Perez was #3. The main difference is their age. Perez is basically where Grimm is, but he is almost 3 years younger. 22 is very young for a pitcher to be competing for a starting rotation spot. I would choose Perez over Grimm pretty much every time. And Grimm hasn't exactly set the world on fire since he has been in the Majors. Left handed pitchers with a 95+ fastball and a plus change-up don't exactly grow on trees.
Yes, the bullpen is the easiest to fix, but it can also get worn down pretty quick. I'm really not worried about the bullpen right now as they are probably just tired. The offense is another story though.

Next comes Oakland (who has their number) then road games in St. Louis and New York.
By the time the damage ends Oakland may well have an insurmountable lead in the West and with the likelihood that both wild card teams will be from the East, the Rangers are looking at being out of contention.
3-4

He'll of an ending to the game, thrown out at the plate

That was a strike by Elvis. This was the spark they needed after one of the worst slumps I've ever seen. Still think they need one more big bat though.
In other news, Martin Perez is 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA in AAA, so he should be called up soon.

Wasn't he previously in rotation? Or did he get demoted for Profar? I imagine Rangers fans are kinda upset they gave up on Davis so soon, his bat in middle of that line up and that park would be devastating

He was never on the bandwagon in the first place. You're insulting the fair weathered fans.

He was back for 1 game and that was immediately after he returned from a broken arm. He's pitching lights out right now and with Grimm, Tepesch, and Lindblom fading, I expect him to be up fairly soon.
As nice as it would be to have Davis hitting 4th right now, it was never going to happen in Texas. Expectations and too many failed chances pretty much doomed him. He is the perfect example of a guy who needed a change of scenery and I'm glad it finally clicked for him.

Come out he closet and just admit you're an Angels fan Quidam.
Actually my second favorite team is the Cardinals. My SO and her family are from St. Louis and I have relatives in the area too.
Oh and I will be at the Saturday game (Tepesch vs. Shelby) watching the damage.
If I have any favorite west coast team it would be the Mariners. I know they generally stink but Seattle is a place I've wanted to visit for years.

Yes, because Colby Lewis, Matt Harrison, Alexi Ogando, Joakim Soria, Martin Perez, and Neftali Feliz are nothing. And that is just the pitchers. 4 All-Star pitchers that have missed significant time, if not the whole year.
Actually you're half right. Ogando, Perez, and Feliz ARE nothing. Lewis had a pretty serious surgery so he may not be back fully until 2014. Harrison may come back OK this year but back injuries are tricky to predict. Soria I don't know anything about.
