If you were a contending MLB team and you knew your window was open for a finite time, how far would you go?

We've seen this happen both ways. Last year one could say that Oakland gave up TOO much. However, we've also seen examples where a team doesn't make a bold enough move while their window is open and they settle for a string of early postseason exit mediocrity.

If you are a team like the Dodgers, and you know that you're maybe one more ace away from a World Series, and you know Greinke is a FA after this season, how far do you go to land a guy like Cueto?

I feel like we as a society favor conservatism in this situation. Aren't bold moves to be appreciated? There's something to be said for going for it.

Who is the player you are wanting to rent? How far back or lead do you have?

If I am the Angels, I give up best player in AAA and AA for Cueto. I think Cueto would sign long term for the Angels. For Chapman, I give up a high level AAA and a mid level AA for him.

As a Reds fan I'll take a couple of top prospects from any team for Cueto or Chapman.

Dodgers go after Hamels instead of Cueto, that way they have him under control longer.

I think Hamels or Chapman ends up with the Yankees. A lefty at Yankee stadium is valuable. But I think the Yankees need starters more than Closers, so Hamels may drive a higher price from Philly to the Yankees.

If I am the Reds and Houston calls about Cueto, I make them have Appel in the deal, if not, hang the phone up.

Fair enough. New way to frame the question:

If you were a solid contender that needs more firepower and your window is closing after this season due to various FA's, etc, what would it take for you to give up a Buxton or Giolito-level prospect?

An All Star? Two All Stars?

Have they said if Leake is on the market?

I think I would trade for him before Cueto, as his price may be lower, but he is the better pitcher.

Yankees have one of the best bullpens in baseball... they need starting pitching and offense at 2B

There is the problem, right now there really isn't any real big named hitters. All the traders have is pitching.

If they dangle a hitter out there they are going to want monster return. I say give up 1 AA and High A prospects, your best ones. Then give them a guy with some experience in MLB as a throw in.

Not much. I tend to agree with what Rosenthal said in his article about the phillies needing to move hamels as soon as they can.

quote:

Alas, the definition of “fair value” has changed. Prospects are in, high-priced pitchers in their early 30s are out – particularly when such pitchers will be readily available this offseason in free agency, where the cost in talent is no more than a draft pick.

And that's for a guy with years of control left. I'd give next to nothing for a half year rental.

very rarely does that happen... KC traded Myers for Shields, they got a ws appearance out of it and Myers has been injured.

I know the A's really went for it last year, but giving up Addison Russell for Samaradzija was so short sighted. I personally am not a fan of rentals and would be devastated if my Yanks gave up Severino or Judge for Cueto

I think once the first trade is made, the flood gates will open as the value was set.

The only teams I think who will be heavy buyers in the market are the Yankees, Angels, and the Cardinals.

The Yankees and Cardinals need to same thing, so it may get to a bidding war with Hamels. Here is the big issue, do the Yanks have a farm.

You realize this isn't the Yankees teams from several years ago... they haven't made a "wow" move at the deadline in awhile

Last year David Huff for cash, BMac for Nuno and cash, Francis for cash, Headley for Solarte, Drew for Kelly Johnson, Prado for O'Brien.

2013: nothing of significance
2012: Ichiro and Casey McGhee

I know that Cashman and lil George have not gone after huge deals. But I think they need to this year. I think missing the playoffs last year put some urgency back into their practices. I also think they want a Starter and need to go get one, I am sure either Hamels or Price could be their guy. But the Cards and Angels need starting pitching also.

No because they missed the playoffs just a couple of years ago as well. Cashman understands with CC, ARod, Tex, Beltran, and McCann this is a team he will rebuild sooner rather than later and isn't unloading top prospects.

The do, which is why I could see them taking on salary of a bad contract in order to obtain a player. Not giving up prospects.
