From Deadspin.

Raiders @ Bears 1984

QBs dropping like flies.

It was ugly enough that the Raiders considered playing their punter at quarterback.

It was ugly enough that the punter refused.

I'm a little too young to remember this game, but it's a pretty fascinating article.

Their punter was Ray Guy, who was pretty much All World at football. He was capable of playing many positions but got pigeonholed into punter and placekicker because he was THAT damn good at it.

Guy was a god punting the football. He was accused of having helium filled footballs (no joke) and at least one team had the balls tested.

When I lived in H'burg, I met Ray numerous times in the local watering holes. A nice down to earth guy (pun intended).

First, who was the QB?

I think that would be a penalty today.

It wasn't uncommon for QB's to be picked up and slammed head first in those days.

Gotcha. It all started going downhill with the "In the grasp" rule and the liberal changes made to it.

McMahon's agent, Steve Zucker, summed up his client's condition this way: "I went down to the locker room—this was in the middle of the game—and I found Jim there, standing at the toilet, in his pads, pissing blood."

This would have almost definitely made my arse quit.

I had one of those in 9th grade. An a-hole speared me in the lower groin area. Spent Christmas in the hospital and had to spend 90 days in bed when I got home. Needless to say it sucked.

I remember reading about this in a book by one of the Raiders' team doctors, Rob Huizenga(sp), called "You're OK, It's Only a Bruise"

Damn. He probably would have been suspended indefinitely for that hit on the QB in today's NFL.
